Chapter 1860

[ 630 words ]

Without a second thought, Claire ripped the steering wheel to the side.

“Ah!”

Valerie saw it coming and instantly pictured their gruesome end.

If Claire hadn’t reacted with lightning speed, they would have been crushed squarely beneath the massive truck.

Instead, it was the black car that had been tracking them that took the direct hit.

Jace and Rory, already on high alert, slammed their brakes violently.

Thanks to the high-performance build of their vehicle, they miraculously came to a screeching halt.

The cars trailing behind them weren’t so lucky, sparking a devastating chain-reaction pileup.

“She actually slipped away again!”

Above the horrific scene unfolding beneath the overpass, a chillingly calm voice echoed from a car cruising by on the upper level.

Claire’s car slammed into the guardrail, but because she had perfectly calculated the angle and impact force, it didn’t punch through and send them plummeting.

She had managed to scrub off the maximum amount of speed in the split second before impact.

The other car, however, was not so fortunate.

The black sedan tracking them had assumed Claire would swerve into the other lane and take the hit from the truck, leaving them unscathed.

Their plan completely backfired, resulting in absolute carnage.

The front end of the black sedan was obliterated, the windshield shattered into a million pieces.

If it hadn’t been for the airbags, they would have been dead on impact.

But even with them, it was a near thing.

The passenger took the worst of it, half their face mangled beyond recognition.

The driver was also bleeding profusely from severe head trauma. Whether either of them would survive was a coin toss.

Inside her car, Claire remained perfectly still.

Her head spun, but her immediate concern was Valerie in the passenger seat.

“Valerie, are you okay?”

Valerie was entirely shell-shocked.

“Oh my god, Claire, I thought I was dead.”

Watching the car hurtle toward the guardrail with a massive drop below had been terrifying!

She had almost become a very literal example of ‘objects falling from heights’!

“It’s okay, don’t be scared. We should be safe for now.”

She said ‘for now’ because she couldn’t be sure if the attackers had backup. This hit had been orchestrated with terrifying precision.

If it weren’t for Claire’s exceptional driving skills, the car’s

performance and her own sheer

nerve, she would have been killed or critically injured.

Was this The Daybreak Syndicate again?

Claire couldn’t be certain.

Jace and Rory had already alerted the rest of the team. The moment they confirmed Claire was being tailed, they had shared her live location in their group chat.

Finnian White and Steele Sterling were nearby. They hadn’t tailed as closely as

Jace and Rory, but they were positioned to close the distance rapidly.

Meanwhile, Chloe and Yvonne had been stationed further ahead.

Wait, no. Finnian and the others couldn’t get through-the multi-car pileup had gridlocked the entire area.

If someone used the chaos to strike at Claire now, their only option would be to abandon their vehicles and sprint.

Chloe and Yvonne, who were further up the road, immediately ditched their car, grabbed two rental scooters, and raced back against traffic.

They didn’t care about protocol; Claire’s safety was the absolute priority.

Further back, Finnian was trapped at the wheel while Steele simply ripped his door open and jumped out.

“I’m going to check the situation.”

He had his camera slung around his neck; posing as a journalist was second nature by now.

A massive crash was the perfect cover for a reporter rushing the scene.

Ambulances and police cruisers soon swarmed the area.

Seeing the mangled wreck of the

truck and the sedan, and then

the guardrail, the first responders were momentarily baffled.

Claire and Valerie finally stepped out once the police arrived.

“Miss, are you two alright?”

Seeing that Claire didn’t appear visibly injured, the female traffic officer let out a sigh of relief.

The accident was catastrophic, and the officers were already dreading the inevitable fallout and the endless reports they’d have to write.
