Chapter 1861
[ 572 words ]
With a major traffic collision resulting in casualties, getting chewed out by upper management was practically guaranteed.
“I’m dizzy. It might be a concussion…”
“Could you take us to the hospital first?” Claire seemed mostly fine, but Valerie was
a different story.
Logically, Valerie’s side of the car had taken the brunt of the impact.
“Hold on just a moment, the ambulances need to prioritize the critically injured.”
The female officer gently reassured Claire and Valerie.
Claire had been helped out of the car, and Valerie followed.
The two sat on camping chairs, waiting for transport to the hospital.
The chairs had actually been pulled from Jace’s car.
Since Jace and Rory were pretending not to know Claire, they were currently playing the role of helpful bystanders.
Jace and his team were the lucky ones in this pileup.
Among the string of rear-end collisions, their vehicle suffered the least damage, all thanks to Jace braking in time.
Eventually, both Claire and Valerie were taken to the hospital, where they gave their statements.
As the first car involved in the sequence, they should have taken the heaviest hit, but thanks to Claire’s elite driving, they survived.
This maneuver ultimately caused the tragedy behind them, so the traffic police focused their questions on her exact actions.
“I believe someone intentionally orchestrated this crash. The people in that black car were tailing me.”
“Can you verify their identities?”
“You can check the surveillance footage. They accelerated in a zone where they were supposed to brake. To avoid them, I was forced to swerve into the adjacent lane.”
“But a car was already barreling down that lane at high speed.”
“Then a large truck cut across the intersection, also moving incredibly fast. If I had accelerated to dodge the speeding car, I would have T-boned the truck.”
“Anyone who drives knows to keep their distance from large trucks—not just because of their blind spots, but because they can’t stop quickly at high speeds.”
“Steering into the guardrail was a desperate gamble.”
The two traffic officers were stunned by Claire’s explanation.
The word ‘gamble’ was enough to convey just how dire the situation had been.
The young girl must have been terrified making that split-second decision, right?
It was a lose-lose scenario. Hitting the truck meant certain death or permanent disability.
Choosing the guardrail offered a razor-thin margin of survival.
But given Claire’s speed, hitting a barrier usually meant punching right through it
and plummeting off the overpass.
Was the guardrail just incredibly well-built?
They couldn’t help but wonder.
Claire didn’t offer any further elaboration.
Back at the precinct, after reviewing the footage multiple times, Captain West concluded, “This girl iss something else. When you talk to her again, ask if she has any professional racing experience.”
Pushing a car to its absolute mechanical limit meant she had to be intimately familiar with high-performance driving.
But experience wasn’t enough. Even a veteran driver’s judgment would be clouded
by sheer panic in that scenario.
Unless, of course, she regularly faced life-or-death situations and already possessed the instinctual reflexes to handle them.
“Captain West, she’s a top-tier
student at The Cabinda Universitet
With grades like hers, there’s no way she’s out street racing.”
“Exactly, Captain. She looks so quiet and well-behaved. She doesn’t seem like the thrill-seeking type at all.”
The two officers who had taken Claire’s statement shared the same impression.
But Captain West trusted his own judgment.
“Put yourself in her shoes. What do you think her reaction was at that exact moment?”
Prompted, the two officers offered their thoughts.
“Fear. Panic. I think that’s just human nature. So she probably steered into the guardrail without thinking, completely oblivious to the
Consequences.”
