Chapter 1862

“I agree. If she had actually thought about the consequences, she probably wouldn’t have dared to hit it. If she had crashed through and plummeted from that height, it would have been a guaranteed fatality.”
The kind where no rescue team could save you.
Both traffic officers firmly believed Claire had acted blindly out of sheer terror.
“Take another look at the footage. I know the cameras on this stretch are terrible, and one even glitched out right before the crash.”
“But look at this frame the tech team restored.”
“Do you see this?”
A high-definition camera had caught a split-second glimpse of Claire.
In the passenger seat, Valerie had her eyes squeezed shut in absolute terror.
But Claire was chillingly composed, her eyes burning with sheer determination. “Well, that’s…”
The two officers were completely speechless.
They had no idea what to say.
Claire’s reaction was entirely inhuman.
“She… she looks like she isn’t afraid of dying at all,” Officer A said, a sudden chill raising goosebumps on his arms.
Did people who could face death that calmly actually exist?
Officer B had a different theory. “Maybe she just knew she could survive the impact?”
Captain West gave Officer B an approving look. “So you also think she was fully confident in her driving skills?”
Officer B blinked. “I was just guessing.”
“Is she actually some kind of underground racing god?”
Captain West sighed. “…I’m not wasting my breath on you two!”
“I want to meet this girl. Since she claimed the car was tailing her, contact Homicide.”
“Tell them to come look at this. If there’s foul play, we’re handing it over.”
A massive traffic accident usually wouldn’t involve Homicide if it were just an accident.
But since the girl explicitly stated she was being hunted, were all the accelerating vehicles coordinated?
Captain West’s instinct was dead on. When Homicide dug in, they immediately found glaring anomalies.
There had been two men in the
black sedan. The passenger died on impact and the driver, who
being rushed to the hospita mysteriously flatlined en route.
The autopsy revealed a massive problem: someone had covertly injected a lethal
toxin into his IV line during transit.
The killer was unbelievably brazen!
Then there was the truck driver, who supposedly died of a sudden heart attack on the way to the hospital.
The coroner confirmed the heart attack was medically induced.
Out of three fatalities, two were outright murders. This instantly kicked the Homicide division into high gear.
Furthermore, the case rapidly escalated up the chain of command.
The reason? Sitting in Claire’s passenger seat was the only daughter of the city’s Deputy Mayor.
Mr. Winthrop was a widower who doted entirely on his daughter.
For her sake, he had never remarried.
Upon hearing the news, Mr. Winthrop was consumed by a cold sweat of retrospective terror.
He demanded a ruthless
investigation, heavily suspecting that his aggressive anti-corruption stance had painted a target on his daughter’s back.
Over at Homicide, Captain Vance was exasperated.
Mr. Winthrop thought the hit was for him, while this Claire girl was convinced the hit was for her.
Apparently, everyone had a persecution complex.
Claire had also mentioned a car speeding by in the adjacent lane without braking.
That driver was still alive.
However, he vehemently insisted he was just speeding because he was late.
“My girlfriend was waiting for me! I got held up at work for an hour and I was already fates. If I didnt floor it, l’a be single for the rest of my life!”
