Chapter 1534
[ 642 words ]
One of the operatives had already pinned him down. “Talk. Where are Miller and the others?”
“They’re in a cave.”
Zeke’s demeanor shifted instantly, replacing his panicked guise with a chillingly
candid tone.
“Which cave?” Silas demanded, wary of walking into another trap.
“Not far ahead. I stumbled upon it by accident a while ago.”
“Miller and I go way back. I never wanted to hurt him.”
Zeke offered the excuse smoothly.
Silas let out a harsh scoff. “So, you’re saying you only came out here to kill the rest of us?”
“Who gave you the intel? Who ordered you to set us up?”
The Daybreak Syndicate certainly worked fast, managing to radicalize a seemingly simple villager in record time.
“No one ordered me. I did it because I felt like it.”
Zeke confessed far too easily, adopting a brazen, shameless attitude that practically screamed he was hiding the real truth.
“You felt like it? On what grounds?”
“Do you even comprehend that we’re out here on a rescue mission?”
Even knowing Zeke was lying through his teeth, Silas was thoroughly enraged by his callous apathy.
“You’re saving people, but you aren’t saving me, so why should I care?”
“You people from the glittering capital, living your glamorous lives-what do you know about the misery of us nobodies?”
“You have money, and you think throwing a few bills around buys my life. Why should I show you any mercy?”
Zeke’s logic was completely unhinged.
“When did we ever ask for your life?”
Silas couldn’t comprehend the madness.
Zeke just flashed a chilling, hollow smile. “Didn’t you? You dragged me deep into the deadly heart of The Aila Highlands. How is that any different from handing me a death sentence?”
“We swore to protect you. We weren’t going to let you die,” Silas countered, realizing the man’s psychology was entirely warped.
But Zeke clearly didn’t believe a word of it.
“If you could protect me, I wouldn’t have gotten injured in the first place.”
“You can’t even handle a few wild beasts. How are you supposed to keep me safe?”
Couldn’t handle them?
The only reason they faced the beasts was because Zeke had intentionally lured them in.
“Captain Carl, stop wasting your breath on him. This area is saturated with mature Dreamweed, and the air is thick with its toxic scent
“The longer you breathe this in, the faster you’ll lose your grip on sanity!”
Claire’s sharp warning cut through the argument.
This wasn’t the time to debate morality with Zeke, nor was it the time for an interrogation.
They needed to find Miller’s team, neutralize the Dreamweed toxin in their systems, and then extract the truth.
The fields here were
chaotic, the fog was suffocating

“Understood.”
Silas knew that even with their tactical gas masks, they wouldn’t last much longer.
Especially with wounded men in their ranks.
Silas ordered his men to drag the handcuffed Zeke to the front to lead the way.
Zeke hadn’t tried to make a run for it simply because he knew he couldn’t outrun the elite operatives surrounding him.
As Silas and his squad pushed
forward, Claire rapidly harvested several Dreamweed plants,
extracting the vital fluids from the roots to synthesize a potent antidote.
She divided the liquid and administered it to the four severely affected men in three measured doses.
Rory and Jace stayed closely by her side, while Dane, Brooks, and River formed a protective perimeter.
Silas took the rest of the tactical team to storm the cave and extract the hostages. After administering the first dose of the freshly brewed antidote, Claire didn’t stop.
She immediately began applying acupuncture to accelerate their bodies’ absorption of the medicine.
The workload was intense, and she needed Elias Sterling to step in and share the burden.
This was exactly where Elias’s mastery of Sterling’s Thirteen Needles proved invaluable.
With Dane standing guard, they were safe from immediate ambushes.
Claire then brewed a large batch of Dreamweed root broth, ensuring every remaining team member drank a full bowl.
Clearing the toxins from their systems was the absolute top priority.
