Chapter 1556
[ 635 words ]
Evie wanted to dig for more information, but seeing the icy expression on Mr. Green’s face across the table, she didn’t dare speak a word.
The man genuinely terrified her.
Even if he was breathtakingly handsome.
When Claire stepped out to take the call, it was the matriarch checking on her safety.
Rory’s status reports weren’t enough; the matriarch needed to hear her granddaughter’s voice.
Claire murmured a few soothing reassurances to finally calm the old woman down.
After hanging up, she pulled out her own phone, only to realize it was completely dead.
She had slept so heavily the night before that she had completely forgotten to charge it.
“Rory, does this town have any local specialties?”
She planned to buy some souvenirs.
“I’ll go buy them. I’ll have Jace stand guard outside,” Rory insisted, refusing to let Claire wander out alone.
For one, the dinner wasn’t over yet; secondly, who knew if Kael’s cell had re- established contact with Sundara after their escape?
What if operatives from The Daybreak Syndicate were lying in wait, ready to abduct Claire and drag her back to Sundara?
They simply couldn’t risk it.
“I kind of wanted to walk around myself,” Claire sighed, though she knew the current situation made a casual stroll far too dangerous.
It wasn’t just Kael’s crew they had to worry about; Quinton Graves had escaped and was still at large.
The Daybreak Syndicate definitely wouldn’t just give up.
That was exactly why the matriarch was so paranoid about Claire’s safety.
Failing to reach Claire’s phone had sent the old woman into an absolute panic.
“Don’t worry about it. You’ll have plenty of chances in the future.”
Rory comforted her.
For now, she would just have to do the sightseeing on the Clan Successor’s behalf.
Ha!
Claire sighed in defeat. “Alright, just make sure to buy a bunch of local specialties. I need them for gifts.”
Back in Apex, aside from the two grandmothers, she needed a gift for Shirley.
Len and Sophia each needed one too; they were both in Cabinda, which made things easy.
Also in Cabinda, she needed
something for The Churchill Family
and The
Green Family, plus a little
something for her roommates and Priscilla Hastings. fo FindNovel.net
With all these assorted gifts, it was going to be a massive haul.
“Once you buy everything, just ship it directly. I’ll text you the addresses.”
Claire jotted down the various addresses on her phone.
Rory suddenly wondered: since this was their first official mission with the Clan Successor, shouldn’t they send some souvenirs back to their friends and instructors, too?
She decided to discuss it with Jace later.
She wanted to see if that cheapskate would actually split the bill!
When Claire returned to the private room, the meal was wrapping up; the wine had
flowed freely, and the atmosphere was much warmer.
They exchanged a few more pleasantries upon her return before the gathering finally dispersed.
However, thanks to Evie’s
spectacular display of instability,
ke
Claire was deeply concerned that
the intel on the Dreamweed might
leak and attract dangerous attention.
Before leaving, she pulled Officer Miller aside for a private word.
“Officer Miller, I’m not trying to be difficult, nor am I holding a personal grudge.”
“But Evie is highly unstable and consumed by jealousy. I am genuinely worried she’s going to compromise the mission.”
“People like her have weak convictions and are incredibly easy targets for manipulation.”
“Before you let any experts set up camp in The Aila Highlands, I strongly advise a rigorous background check on everyone they bring.”
“I don’t mean anything by it; I just refuse to let the intel on the Dreamweed slip into the wrong hands.”
“I’ve already detailed exactly how catastrophic the Dreamweed is.”
“You fully understand the consequences of a leak, right?”
Officer Miller winced sharply.
Of course he did.
The brass really loved handing him absolute nightmares!
Claire had no idea how Officer Miller ultimately handled the conversation with Professor Hastings.
But before she even left the town, her new group chat buzzed with the news: Evie Grant had been officially expelled from the project.
