Chapter 1561
[ 589 words ]
“Keep the windows rolled up!”
Just as the young driver reached to crack the window, the sergeant barked an order to stop him.
The driver looked confused, but the sergeant’s face was grim. “If they’re armed, opening that window is a death sentence!”
They couldn’t see the cars in front of them anymore, but they definitely hadn’t gone far.
The two cars behind them had killed their engines, simply waiting for the convoy to make a move.
The second Wang stuck his head out, a sniper from the rear vehicle could blow it off.
The sergeant was fiercely protective of Wang. The kid had only been in the service for two years and was a phenomenal driver.
He was way too young to die on a desolate mountain pass.
“Understood, Sergeant. I got careless.”
In the back, Dane and Claire had reached the exact same tactical conclusion.
They also suspected the pursuing operatives were heavily armed and let out a collective breath when the sergeant stopped Wang.
“The sergeant knows what he’s doing. Let him handle it for now.”
Dane reassured Claire.
But with the vehicle pinned down, the situation was rapidly deteriorating.
Up front, Wang palpably felt the rising danger. He looked at the sergeant. “How do
we communicate with the civilian? He looks like he’s about to panic.”
Seeing that the soldiers weren’t opening their doors to check the damage completely shattered the shepherd’s expectations.
The sergeant grabbed a megaphone, cracked the window just a fraction of an inch, and projected his voice outside.
“Sir, we are on a classified military operation. Time is critical. Please clear the livestock immediately.”
The shepherd clearly hadn’t expected that response.
“But I can’t move them by myself! Can one of you please come down and help me?”
The shepherd limped two steps forward and pointed to his arm. “I injured myself working yesterday.”
Wang looked at the sergeant. “The civilian is injured and can’t move the goats. What’s the call?”
The sergeant’s headache flared into a migraine.
“I’m going out!” the sergeant declared, refusing to let Wang take the risk.
Dane shot a glance at Brooks Green.
Brooks stood up. “Sergeant, I’ll go with you!”
The sergeant frowned. “That won’t be necessary. I’ll handle it.”
He knew the man was Mr. Green’s personal bodyguard.
But in the sergeant’s eyes, Brooks was still a civilian.
Knowing there were likely snipers trained on the car, he couldn’t let a civilian walk into the line of fire.
If things went south, he could dive for cover faster alone.
Adding another body just doubled the casualty risk.
“I’m coming with you.” Brooks insisted, preparing to disembark.
“Don’t open that door!”
Just as both men reached for the handles, Claire’s voice cut through the tension like a knife.
Both men snapped their heads back to look at her.
The sergeant was confused. “Claire, why can’t we go out? The civilian can’t clear the road alone.”
“His injuries are fake,” Claire stated coldly.
The sergeant looked skeptical. The
man looked like a perfectly ordinaret

Claire fell silent. It was just a tactical deduction, she

Dane, however, didn’t hesitate. He pulled a thick stack of hundred-dollar bills from his wallet.
“Brooks, give this to him. Buy the goats and tell him to get out of the way.”
Brooks took the cash. Instead of stepping out, he cracked his window just enough to slide the money through.
“Sir, this more than covers the cost
of two goats. Leave the animals

Hearing this, the shepherd frantically waved his hands. “No, no! I can’t take money from the military!”
“I couldn’t possibly accept this. The goats fell on their own. Keep your money!”
