Chapter 1591

“If you try anything, I’ll make you wish you died in that car.”
His interrogation tactics were a far cry from standard police protocol.
Reese didn’t say a word, pouring all her focus into treating the wound.
But barely two minutes later, her hands stopped.
“How is he?”
Zeke prayed for a miracle.
But Reese wasn’t a surgeon. She turned to him, her eyes completely hollow. “I stopped the external bleeding, but his vitals are crashing.”
“There might be someone who can save him!” Reese suddenly remembered Claire.
Wasn’t that the whole reason Sundara was trying to extract her? Because she was a medical genius?
“Who?” Zeke had no idea who Claire was.
“Claire. The prodigy we were trying to take.”
“But…” Reese swallowed the rest of her sentence. She had already sent Claire away.
With the atrocious medical facilities out here, this officer was as good as dead. Understanding the situation, Zeke stayed silent, grabbed her wrists, and moved to cuff her again.
A feral gleam flashed in Reese’s eyes, and she instantly twisted, trying to lock Zeke in a grapple.
One second she was a desperate nurse, the next she was a cornered predator. She was lethal, but Zeke was better.
And with the backup cruisers already skidding to a halt around them, there was absolutely nowhere to run.
Zeke wrestled her to the dirt, neutralizing her effortlessly.
Reese went totally limp, offering no further resistance. Her sudden attack had just been a dying reflex.
She didn’t want to fall into the hands of the Solenian government. She wanted to disappear.
But realizing escape was physically impossible, she simply surrendered.
“Biting the hand that bleeds for you.”
Zeke sneered, his disgust for her bottomless.
An officer had taken a bullet to keep her alive, and she still tried to use his dying breaths as a distraction to run.
Reese lowered her eyes, staying silent.
The Syndicate wanted her in a body bag, and she was determined to survive. But
being a prisoner of Solenia was a nightmare all its own.
The authorities always claimed to
treat their prisoners well, but
Solenians were notoriously
psychological in their interrogations. They knew exactly how to break person down.
Reese was genuinely terrified she might actually spill the Syndicate’s secrets.
Meanwhile, the burly man puffing on a cigarette had driven the decoy SUV deep into the mountains.
This was their stronghold. They were a ring of smugglers, outlaws who thrived entirely off the grid.
“We’ll throw her in with the other captives when the transport gets here. The client paying for her extraction called her a golden goose.”
“She’s way above the usual stock we move!”
Hearing him talk like that, the rest of the crew leaned in, eyes greedy.
“So, Boss, how much is this golden goose actually worth?”
The man held up two fingers. “Twenty grand?” The crew groaned in collective disappointment.
Twenty grand wasn’t worth throwing a party over.
“Try adding a zero,” the boss smirked, radiating smug arrogance.
The room erupted. “Damn! Moving her is worth ten regular captives combined!”
“That’s
her to even the best part,” the
boss bragged. “As long as we deliver
her to the rendezvous, theby?
dropping another massive payout.”
“I don’t know the exact number, but this guy has deep pockets.”
“We keep this girl untouched and get her to the drop.”
“Have the girls clean her up. We can’t have anyone recognizing her on the road.”
The boss was extremely pleased with the contract he had secured through the dark web.
He was certain they were going to make an absolute killing.
He even figured they could pivot their whole business model toward this kind of high-end, VIP transport.
It required significantly less overhead.
As long as they stayed off the cops’ radar, it was easy money.
And their crew had always been exceptionally good at staying off the radar.
Unfortunately, less than thirty minutes after hauling Claire into their compound, the police kicked down the doors and completely dismantled their entire operation.
