Chapter 1645

“I’ll pick you up tomorrow.”
There was zero chance Dane was letting her take a cab to a high-society event, even if they both had VIP passes.
“I might be at the university hospital.”
Barry and Dr. Terrance both had deep ties to the Cabinda medical scene, and the academic atmosphere there was intense.
The higher-ups had specifically arranged for the conference lectures to be held on
that campus.
“Understood,” Dane replied smoothly. “If the venue changes, just text me the location tomorrow afternoon.”
The moment Claire walked through her front door, her phone rang. It was Hillary.
She had finally regained consciousness over the last forty-eight hours. While she was a long way from fully recovered, Dr. Tandy and Claire’s extreme interventions had dragged her back from the brink of death. She was just thrilled to be breathing. The second she felt stable enough to speak, she asked for her phone.
“Claire, I can’t thank you enough. If it weren’t for you, I’d be in a body bag right now.”
Hanson had already confessed to blindly transferring the Gaming Company Equity to Claire while she was unconscious.
Hillary was blunt and straightforward; she didn’t care about corporate politics.
To her, a gift was a gift. Someone gave Claire millions of dollars in equity-why on earth would Claire be mad about that?
Still, Claire was her literal savior. Even with Hanson’s massive financial gesture, Hillary needed to express her own profound gratitude.
“I’m stuck in this bed for the foreseeable future, but the second they discharge me, dinner is on me.”
“It’s a deal, Hillary. Just focus on resting and getting your strength back first.” Hillary’s laugh was weak but genuine. “I definitely have a lot of resting to do.” “Claire, since you practice Traditional Medicine… is there any way you could write me a specialized prescription? Something to aggressively rebuild my body?” Claire immediately detected the desperate, pleading edge in Hillary’s voice. “Did something happen?” Claire’s tone softened, inherently soothing.
Hillary was silent for a long time before she finally spoke. “I fell from a skyscraper. The structural damage to my body is catastrophic. The rehab is going to be brutal.”
“I can get back to functioning like a normal civilian, but high-impact, tactical movements… my body simply won’t survive them anymore.”
“That was Dr. Tandy’s official assessment. Because of it, the agency is forcing me to take a desk job.”
“And it’s not just the agency forcing me out. My mom is using this as an excuse to demand retire from the. I field entirely and marry Hanson immediately.”
And then what?
Have kids, play house, and fade into a quiet, domesticated existence?
That had never been her dream. She refused to be reduced to a housewife whose only purpose was breeding and serving her husband.
She wanted to be out in the field, hunting monsters.
Hanson had never once tried to clip her wings. Why were her own parents the ones acting as her prison wardens?
But if her parents were this aggressively opposed to her returning to active duty, what about Hanson’s family?
Even if he supported her, what would his parents think?
Would they accept a daughter-in-law whose career had a terrifyingly high mortality rate?
Hanson’s family was deeply entrenched in politics. Politicians demanded the optics of a stable, flawless marriage.
They undoubtedly wanted her permanently sidelined, too.
“Claire… if you were in my shoes, what would you do?”
Claire sighed inwardly. Asking an outsider a question like that was utterly pointless. There was no “if.” Claire was never going to accidentally swan dive off a skyscraper.
“Hillary, it’s not about what *I* would

“Even if I aggressively treat you and maximize your recovery, you still have to leave your current squad.”
Claire had already reviewed the charts; Hillary’s body would never return to its original peak.
“I can absolutely help you claw back
Qu
to maybe sixty or seventy percent of your former physical capacity. But the process is agonizingly slow You’re going to be out of the game for a minimum of three years regardless of what you decide.”
“Have you even thought about what the landscape will look like three years from now?”
Hillary choked on her words. She hadn’t realized the timeline was that devastating.
