Chapter 1681
[ 658 words ]
“I think I hear Raymond yelling. Could the people out for my blood have found the FIB headquarters through us?”
If she had unwittingly led the enemy right to their doorstep, wouldn’t she be the ultimate sinner?
“Or maybe he just regrets letting you take his mushroom sauce,” Dane replied.
Dane actually knew a bit about Raymond’s background.
Claire was curious. “Why? Didn’t he say it was sent from his hometown?”
“Can’t they just send more later?”
Still, it was a long way from Cabinda. For Raymond to part with an entire jar of it was incredibly generous.
“It’s not that they can’t send it. The truth is, the person making that mushroom sauce for him isn’t his brother’s wife.”
“Even though his brother and sister-in-law treat him decently, they aren’t the ones who care about him the most.”
From what Dane had gathered, Raymond once had a childhood sweetheart named Bonnie Miller. The two had been deeply in love.
But he had always treated Bonnie like a sister. After leaving to study and eventually settling in Cabinda for work, his visits home grew increasingly rare.
Dedicated entirely to his career, he never married and had no desire to do so. Heartbroken, poor Bonnie was eventually married off to someone else.
Tragically, her husband passed away early.
When Raymond learned that she was struggling, he started sending money back home regularly—half to his brother’s family, and half to Bonnie.
With no other way to repay him, Bonnie began making his favorite mushroom meat
sauce.
The ‘mushrooms’ in the sauce weren’t standard button mushrooms, but a rare wild fungus that grew in the mountains of their hometown.
Right now, it was too cold, and the wild fungus hadn’t sprouted yet. So once he finished this jar, there wouldn’t be anyone to make him more.
“How do you know things about Raymond that he doesn’t even know himself?” Claire looked at him skeptically.
Dane offered a helpless half-smile. “I went on a business trip up north once. My route happened to pass through Raymond’s hometown, so he asked me to drop off some things for his brother’s family and Bonnie.”
“It was only after I got there that I realized they had been keeping a secret from him all this time.”
Claire frowned, feeling that was unfair. “If they keep hiding it, isn’t Bonnie’s devotion going to waste?”
“Perhaps after all these years, her feelings for Raymond have simply morphed into familial affection,” Dane noted. He wasn’t one to meddle in others’ affairs.
So even knowing the truth, he had kept his mouth shut.
He had, however, reminded Raymond that his relatives back
home were getting older. If he didn’t visit soon he’d end up like a
complete stranger in his own
hometown.

If Raymond had taken the hint, he would have found a chance to take some time off and visit.
In reality, Raymond had dragged his feet for another two years.
He was planning to finally go back this year!
He wanted to visit right before the national holidays and bring his brother’s family to Cabinda to watch the grand parade.
His brother’s family had never been to the capital. He remembered when he first left for college his brother had sworn to get into a university in the city so they could be together.
But the truth was, his brother wasn’t a great student and had dropped out of school early on.
Claire let out a long sigh, feeling deeply empathetic toward Raymond’s situation.
He really could have gotten together with Bonnie and had a companion for his later years.
Then again, the man was married to his job. Even if he found a partner, it would probably just end up being someone to take care of him.
Forget it. Better not drag someone else down with him.
Besides the mushroom sauce, it wasn’t like Bonnie had prepared anything else for him.
Maybe she had long since moved on from this unromantic workaholic!
There were quite a few people like Raymond who dedicated their entire lives to the country.
Claire admired them immensely, but she knew she could never bring herself to be like that.
