Chapter 1695
[ 634 words ]
That son was Flora’s pride and joy, as well as her deepest secret.
She wired money back every single year. Her life only had meaning if her son was thriving!
He was the child she had with the only man she had ever truly loved.
Tragically, good men rarely lived long, and he had died in a freak accident.
Unable to marry and branded a pariah by her village having a child out of wedlock in that era was a scandal that humiliated her entire family—she fled.
She only came to Kaston after hearing from distant relatives that there was serious money to be made here. She wanted to build a nest egg for her boy.
No one cared about Flora’s tragic backstory, but everyone knew one thing for certain: she would rather die than give back a single dollar.
Her son was brilliant. He had just gotten into a top university, and might even apply to study abroad.
That required a staggering amount of money. Furthermore, her son had a weak constitution and required expensive daily medication.
After a moment’s hesitation, Flora made the call-she would sell Barrett alongside the dying man.
The dying guy was priced at eight thousand, and Barrett at twelve thousand.
In reality, the entire twenty grand was just to buy Barrett. The half-dead guy was essentially a freebie.
She had no idea how these ‘pharmacists’ treated corpses.
Maybe they could still run tests on a guy with one foot in the grave?
Once the deal was struck, Flora ordered her men to drag Barrett back in.
She had also force-fed him a muscle relaxant.
The drug instantly turned his limbs to jelly.
Even if Barrett wanted to fight his way out, he physically couldn’t.
Flora pulled him aside for a final word. “Don’t hate me for tossing you out, Barrett. My clinic here is just a joke.”
“I can’t save your brother, and you…” Flora shot a resentful glare at his crotch.
“I didn’t expect you to be firing blanks.”
“I strongly suggest you behave and do whatever they say. They’re doctors. Maybe they can actually keep you two alive.”
“If they happen to smuggle you back across the border, that’s your golden ticket.”
“Go quietly. Otherwise, you’re staying here to learn how to properly service a woman.”
“I have ways of breaking people. If all else fails, I’ll ship you off to the next country over.”
“They love ladyboys over there. Since you can’t perform like a man, you’ll just have to find a new career path.”
Barrett was completely speechless. He had no earthly idea what kind of monstrous lies Claire and Rory had fed this woman.
But judging from Flora’s threats, those two possessed zero moral boundaries.
He couldn’t exactly defend his manhood right now, so he plastered on a look of sheer panic. Theydook like fragile college girls! How could they possibly be doctors?”
“Flora, are you sure about this?”
“We had a deal! You keep us alive, and I work for you for free!”
Barrett played the part of the terrified, betrayed victim flawlessly.
Even Claire wanted to applaud his acting skills.
Feeling she had been more than merciful, Flora slipped into her
practiced maternal tone. “Don’t

“The cartels are tightening the net. It’s only a matter of time before someone leaks my location.”
“I have an entire family of workers to feed. I’m not going to let them all get
slaughtered just to hide you two…”
Finally, Barrett acted as though he had been reluctantly persuaded.
“Flora, I know you’re a good person. If you hadn’t taken us in, my brother and I would be dead already.”
“Since we’re still worth something to you, we’ll go with them. I hope your business thrives.”
Watching the emotional farewell, Claire almost wondered if Barrett and Flora had actually formed a twisted trauma bond.
She and Rory stepped out into the hall.
They left Stephen and Jace inside to
