Chapter 1701
[ 600 words ]
“You guys wouldn’t know, but Dewitt absolutely loves my Honey Glazed Chicken.”
Seeing the pride on the chef’s face, Claire casually replied, “Is that so? Let me give him a call and ask!”
Gerald stared at her in shock. “You know Dewitt?”
“Is it that weird? I’m his cousin, and we share the same last name,” Claire said, looking bewildered.
She glanced at Stephen, hoping he could shed some light on the situation.
Stephen immediately saw right through the cook’s guilty expression.
Gerald rubbed his nose awkwardly. “Not weird at all. So you’re cousins, huh? No wonder you’re both so good-looking.”
“Well, I’ve got water boiling on the stove, so I’ll catch up with you guys later.”
The poor guy had been thrilled to run into a group of relaxed tourists from Solenia and had a million things to say, but now his grand speech was dead in the water.
Watching Gerald beat a hasty retreat, Claire turned back to Stephen. “Is knowing Dewitt some kind of terrifying secret?”
“Why did he look like he was running for his life?”
And wasn’t this guy supposed to be close to Dewitt in the first place?
“Because Dewitt hates Honey Glazed Chicken,” Stephen said flatly.
Surprisingly, he knew a fair bit about their cousin’s preferences.
Whenever Dewitt visited Montara, he always made a point to grab a meal with Stephen.
Sitting together at the table, Dewitt had actually complained about this exact dish made by this exact chef.
The chicken itself was fine, but Dewitt found the texture off-putting. He simply didn’t like it.
The traditional version of the dish was sweet and sour.
And Dewitt absolutely loathed anything sweet and sour.
He couldn’t even stomach a simple sweet and sour cabbage salad.
In fact, Dewitt practically viewed anyone who enjoyed sweet and sour flavors as a complete heretic.
Yet, oddly enough, he loved BBQ Ribs.
He didn’t want the fake stuff slathered in cheap ketchup; he wanted authentic, slow- roasted BBQ Ribs.
“A guy bragging about his connections suddenly runs into someone who actually knows the person. Of course he panicked,” Stephen explained.
The group found it hilarious. No one really blamed Gerald for making up stories.
If left to their own devices, people would brag about knowing the President.
Since they were all strangers who would likely never cross paths again, it was harmless.
Anyone could spin a tall tale.
Perhaps feeling guilty, Gerald actually sent over some

later.
“Is this hush money?” Claire asked instinctively.
Gerald scratched his head, looking sheepish: “Even though Dewitt hates my chicken, he really loves mye
Sisted beef brisket.
“If you see him next time, maybe you could put in a good word for m Cooking he whispered to aire.
Claire blinked and lowered her voice to match his. “Are you gunning for a raise?”
Otherwise, there was no reason to suck up to Dewitt this hard.
“Absolutely not! What kind of guy do you think I am?” Gerald protested.
“I just have a thing for Gloria, the lady serving the food.”
Claire was speechless. Wasn’t that way harder than getting a raise?
“The real question is, does this Gloria woman have a thing for you?”
It didn’t matter if he liked her if the feeling wasn’t mutual.
“Of course she does. Why wouldn’t she?”
“She eats my food every day and is always smiling.”
“Plus, we’re both from Solenia. We have a lot in common.”
Did he really need clearance from the top boss for that?
Claire didn’t get it, but she was definitely shocked.
She hadn’t realized a foreign mining camp had such strict dating regulations.
Gerald seemed to read her expression and quickly clarified. “Oh, no, it’s nothing like that.”
“It’s about Gloria’s son. He works directly under Dewitt.”
“Gloria made it clear if her son approves, then we can make this official.”
