Chapter 1714
[ 602 words ]
No one had anticipated that their critical extraction problem would be solved so effortlessly.
Especially Finnian and Steele. They had run dozens of black-ops extractions before.
While this mission had its chaotic moments, the resolution was incredibly smooth.
Stumbling into Mr. Charles’s compound was the definition of finding a miracle in the darkest hour.
Even capturing Gloria had proven to be an incredible tactical victory.
Interrogating her would undoubtedly expose a massive underground syndicate.
Every operative tied to her network was going to burn.
The local General’s forces eventually caught wind of their escape and pursued them aggressively.
Claire and the team had maintained their cover flawlessly, even procuring crates of exceedingly rare medicinal herbs to solidify their ‘doctor’ alibi.
But that didn’t stop the military’s relentless dragnet.
Unfortunately for the General, his troops were too late.
Mr. Charles was leagues ahead of them.
To guarantee the safety of his grandson’s new doctors, Mr. Charles unleashed his full military might.
His heavily armored private army intercepted the General’s forces head-on.
The brutal standoff bought Claire’s team the exact window they needed to vanish.
The General’s men chased them all the way to the border, only to watch helplessly as Claire’s convoy crossed safely into Solenia.
The extraction was a total success. Rumor had it the General’s rogue commanders engaged in a massive firefight with Mr. Charles’s army, resulting in hundreds of casualties on both sides.
No one knew how a ceasefire was eventually brokered.
Most likely, both warlords realized the escalating body count was bad for business and agreed to stand down.
Regardless, it was no longer Claire’s problem.
Right now, she was obsessing over the contraband she had smuggled back.
“Technically speaking, it’s highly illegal to use pangolin scales in domestic medical practice.”
Claire rested her chin on her hand, looking at Tandy. “Dr. Tandy, could you put some strings with the higher-ups and see f1 can keep this batch?”
Tandy stroked his imaginary beard, putting on a serious face. “By the book, these are meant to be incinerated.”
Claire felt a sharp pang of net footed the bill for the black-moul nei
pain. Even though the FIB had
herbs, these were top-tier authentie ingredients!
Incinerating them was a tragic waste. Wouldn’t it be better to use them to save lives?
“Don’t worry about asking permission. If you need them for your formulas, use them.”
“I’ll hand over the rest to the authorities.”
Essentially, Tandy was giving Claire a blank check to siphon off whatever she needed while he handled the bureaucratic nightmare.
After all, they hadn’t poached the animals; they bought the scales during a covert
op.
If they truly destroyed them now, it would be a senseless tragedy.
“That experimental coagulant you mentioned—if you synthesize it with these scales, will it boost the efficacy?”
Tandy was ultimately a modern surgeon; his knowledge of esoteric herbal alchemy was limited.
If the scales actively interfered with
the chemical compound and
couldn’t be substituted then
obviously, she should use the
superior ingredients, right?
Conversely, if the scales were the absolute holy grail of ingredients, then exploiting them was a necessary evil.
As long as Claire was producing revolutionary medicine, the government would gladly fund her research and supply the raw materials.
Naturally, intentionally seeking out endangered species was strictly prohibited.
But since they already had this confiscated batch, there was no point in letting it rot.
Claire instantly caught Tandy’s drift.
“I want to run some clinical trials. Set aside a large portion for me.”
“The second I have a breakthrough, you’ll be the first to know.”
“If I can synthesize a superior alternative, then we won’t even need these scales anymore.”
That was Claire’s ultimate endgame.
Tandy nodded in deep approval. “You haven’t been blinded by the allure of
forbidden medicine. Excellent.”
A lesser doctor would have become obsessed, convinced that illegal ingredients were the only path to a miracle cure.
