Chapter 1721
[ 626 words ]
“They’re never going to go out and get real jobs.”
Lex had often wondered why her parents couldn’t just earn a living like everyone else’s.
But they were perfectly content being parasites, expecting their daughters to sacrifice everything for the family.
With two girls to leech off of, why would they ever break a sweat?
Even doing the bare minimum of odd jobs around their hometown made them act like they were breaking their backs.
Even though Lex had barely cost them a dime for her education, they still acted as if raising her was some monumental act of charity.
Not to mention their so-called generosity in allowing her to attend college.
In their eyes, letting a daughter get a higher education was practically unheard of.
In reality, if it hadn’t been for the local authorities stepping in to pressure them, Lex’s parents probably never would have let her go.
“We need to sell them a dream,” Zara suggested, always full of scheming ideas.
“If we tell them they can make a fortune-like washing dishes overseas to build a massive nest egg-wouldn’t they jump at the chance?”
“That could actually work!”
Skylar clapped her hands in excitement.
It took a ruthless plan to handle ruthless people, and if they didn’t do something about Lex’s parents, Lex would be the one paying the price.
They were already furious that they hadn’t managed to trick her into coming home for the winter break.
They were closing in on her step by step, like predators ready to strike.
If she wasn’t careful, they would chew her up and spit her out.
“A lot of people want to work abroad right now, but very few actually make it out.”
“Especially to first-world countries. It’s almost impossible.”
Seeing everyone looking at her, Claire offered a suggestion. “What about Southeast Asia? They’re always looking for manual labor.”
It wouldn’t necessarily make them rich, but the grueling work would definitely leave them too exhausted to fly back and harass Lex.
As for how to get them there, the girls might not have the connections, but that didn’t mean others didn’t.
As long as it was strictly legal and didn’t involve human trafficking, it was a solid plan.
Lex hesitated. “It’s not that I can’t
bear to part with them
I just
trouble just to help me…”
Both Zara and Claire understood her unspoken fears.
“Alright, take your time to think it over. Maybe we’ll come up with another way,” Claire said.
Claire didn’t push the issue. If Lex were completely ruthless from the start, she wouldn’t be in this mess.
Her hesitation was completely normal.
It was the mindset of a daughter who had spent her entire life being ground down
and exploited by her own parents.
She had her moments of strength, but she also had her vulnerabilities.
Still, Claire couldn’t help but add a
gentle warning, “You’re far away et

Lex’s face drained of color. “Layla is just a kid!”
If her parents realized they couldn’t get what they wanted out of her, what if they sold Layla off to settle their debts?
Claire remained silent.
To parents entirely devoid of humanity, age meant absolutely nothing.
Lex gripped the edge of her bed curtain tightly. “I’ll try contacting Social Services
back home. Hopefully, they can check in on her!”
She had to get her sister out of that nightmare.
If only she could have brought Layla with her to college.
In that moment, Lex bitterly regretted not being some academic prodigy.
If only she were…

Even if Layla just attended an ordinary high school here, Lex would have found a
way to provide for them both.
“Give it a shot,” Claire said softly.
She wasn’t going to dictate Lex’s choices.
Zara kept her mouth shut as well.
Skylar looked like she wanted to say something, but held back.
