Chapter 1744
[ 537 words ]
“No matter what kind of connections she has, pure talent is the only thing that truly matters.”
“Don’t you agree, Claire?”
Yorick had rehearsed this speech in his head over and over.
He thought it sounded perfectly rational and caring.
To his surprise, Claire looked at him with sheer skepticism. “How do you know my sister stopped practicing?”
“Are you saying she got arrogant just because she secured a spot in the troupe?”
“No, no, that’s not what I meant,” Yorick backpedaled, completely caught off guard.
Wasn’t a normal person supposed to thank him for caring about their sister?
Why was Claire going completely off-script?
Claire remained unimpressed. Did he really expect her to doubt her own sister over a manipulative jerk like him?
“I think there’s a misunderstanding between you two.”
“She loves dancing. Even if she gets into the troupe, she won’t slack off.”
Yorick’s smile tightened into an awkward grimace. “But… she hasn’t come to practice for two days. I assumed…”
Claire cut him off. “She told me her partner is in the hospital.”
“Are you her new partner?”
Yorick froze. He hadn’t expected Yolande to tell Claire that.
Was Yolande badmouthing him to her cousin?
Saying he wasn’t as good as Quentin?
Quentin was just arrogant. He had a bit of talent and thought he owned the world. If
he didn’t have Yolande making him look good, he would be nothing!
“Yes. We haven’t been partnered as long as she and Quentin were.”
“Maybe our chemistry isn’t as solid, so she doesn’t want to practice with me.”
Yorick put on his best neglected-puppy look.
If he were talking to a girl who had a crush on him, she would instantly be comforting him.
But Claire felt absolutely nothing for him, so she just delivered the brutal truth.
“you guys lack chemistry,
she’s probably just uncomfortable
dancing with you
“Or maybe your fundamentals just aren’t as strong as Quentin’s, so she feels it’s a waste of time.”
Yorick’s eye physically twitched.
He had met blunt people before, but
no one
plunged it directly into a raw nonet
who grabbed a knife and
like Claire just did.
Did she really expect him to just admit he was worse than Quentin?
“If you just wanted me to lecture my sister, we’re done here.”
“I respect her decisions. And honestly, you don’t need to worry about her slacking
off.”
“She’s danced her whole life. It’s practically breathing for her.”
“Talent isn’t something everyone is born with.”
“Unlike you, she doesn’t need to desperately overcompensate with practice just to keep up.”
Yorick looked like he was about to cough up blood.
He had never imagined Claire would be this vicious.
Was she completely unafraid of getting hit, talking to people like this?
But then he remembered how she had forced a girl to apologize over a megaphone in the cafeteria onđoop, and he realized she was actually going easy on high.
He started to wonder if he had miscalculated his approach entirely.
No, he needed to regroup and figure out exactly what made her tick.
“I’m sorry. Maybe I really am holding her back. I’ll make sure to practice more.”
Claire gave him a thumbs-up. “Good luck with that. If there’s nothing else, I’m heading out.”
Yorick quickly stopped her. “Wait, Claire! There’s actually one more thing I wanted to bring up.”
Claire paused, fully seeing through him. “What is it?”
Weren’t you just here because you were so worried about my sister?
Suddenly you have another agenda?
