Chapter 1764
[ 664 words ]
Queenie was a bundle of nerves. Claire picked up on the tension immediately and subtly slowed her pace to give the older woman time to breathe.
Upstairs, Yvette was just as frantic. Her hands were sweating as she clutched her phone in a death grip.
“Yvette, why hasn’t she called yet? Do you think she got lost trying to find the hospital?”
Evie was already losing her patience.
She had woken up at the crack of dawn just to deal with these poor relatives.
If it weren’t for them, she could have slept for another two hours.
“It’s my fault. I should have asked which hotel they were staying at last night and just gone to pick them up this morning.”
As the daughter-in-law, it was her duty to greet her mother-in-law properly. Why on earth had she let the older woman navigate the hospital on her own? Yvette had never had a mother-in-law before, and the etiquette completely slipped her mind.
“Why would you go out of your way to pick them up? Don’t you have to take care of Quentin?”
“Besides, if they really are just gold-diggers here for a handout, treating them like royalty is only going to make them bolder…”
Evie’s rant died in her throat as the elevator doors slid open, revealing Claire leading a small group.
Because Yvette and Evie were standing right in the corridor by the elevators, every word of Evie’s spiteful complaint echoed perfectly into the newcomers’ ears. Queenie and Pandora might have been older, but their hearing was sharp. Queenie thought to herself, *Is this my daughter-in-law?*
She looked like the woman she had briefly spotted in the hotel lobby last night.
Yvette, however, didn’t immediately notice Queenie. Her eyes locked onto Claire. She was just about to offer a warm smile when Evie beat her to the punch.
“You again?” Evie sneered, her voice dripping with venom.
Yvette quickly swatted Evie’s arm. “Evie!”
“I didn’t realize your family owned the hospital. I’ll come and go as I please.”
Claire wasn’t about to coddle her.
“Though, I’m surprised you’re still

*Quentin? She must be talking about my grandson,* Queenie’s mind raced as she coldly appraised Yvette and Evie.
This Yvette was the wife her son had chosen. Whatever her flaws, Queenie wasn’t going to overstep and judge her.
But a granddaughter-in-law? There was absolutely no way she would accept a volatile, foul-mouthed idiot.
Queenie didn’t necessarily hate Evie yet, but she had definitely heard the ‘gold- digger’ comment.
If her grandson was seriously going
to marry someone like this, she would have to seriously consider liquidating all her domestic assets to

“I…” Evie faltered, suddenly remembering Quentin’s harsh rejection. Her bravado crumbled.
“When I leave is none of your business!” Evie snapped, still unable to swallow her pride.
Claire couldn’t be bothered to argue with her. She simply turned to Yvette. “Ms. Young, were you waiting for someone?”
“How did you…” Yvette started to ask, but realization slammed into her before she could finish the sentence.
*Could one of the older women standing behind Claire be my mother-in-law?*
“Did you bring them up? Do you know which one is…” What was she supposed to say?
Calling her ‘mother-in-law’ felt incredibly presumptuous. They were literally just meeting to verify their identities!
She needed to be absolutely certain before making any emotional commitments.
But she didn’t even know the woman’s name. How was she supposed to address her?
“This is the person you’re waiting for.”
Claire turned her hand gracefully toward Queenie.
Queenie offered a poised, elegant smile. “Hello. You must be Yvette. I’m Julian’s mother, Queenie.”
Yvette stared at Queenie’s warm, yet undeniably authoritative smile. She had absolutely no idea what kind of background this woman came from, but it was clear she was no ordinary person.
“Hello. I was starting to worry you got lost. I’m so sorry, I really should have picked you up from your hotel.”
Yvette discreetly assessed Queenie and quickly concluded that her new mother-in- law was going to be a formidable presence.
