Chapter 1781
[ 656 words ]
“It wasn’t without losses, just not as devastating as it could have been.”
How could there be no losses? A substantial amount of information had definitely been sold off.
What did the mines hold the most of? Raw jade stones, of course.
Over in Kaston, there were public auctions, and the exact volume of raw stones they sent out each time was strictly calculated.
She could have easily leaked those numbers to Dewitt’s competitors.
In short, Gloria Luvell had certainly committed more than just one crime.
And she had sold intel more than once.
If Claire and the team hadn’t been on high alert, they might not have made it out of The Zen Marches safely with Silas Carl.
“You don’t need to worry about these things. Rest assured, I will handle it.”
“But since Pandora has arrived in Cabinda, you should spend some time with her when you’re free.”
“Cabinda is a very special place for her.”
Claire paused. She knew absolutely nothing about the older woman’s past, aside from the fact that her father had studied in Cabinda. She truly had no idea what required such special attention.
Was the older woman afraid that seeing the city where her son once studied would trigger painful memories?
“You probably don’t know this, but your great-grandfather also went to university in Cabinda. In fact, he attended the exact same school you’re at right now.”
“Pandora also went to university in Cabinda back in the day.”
Claire knew Pandora had attended The Cabinda University, but she had no idea her great-grandfather was an alumnus too.
She suddenly wondered if the very atmosphere of The Cabinda University was simply destined for her family.
No wonder The James Family had managed to build such a massive and powerful enterprise. No matter how tough times got, they never compromised on education.
The James Village placed extreme importance on academics.
Claire even suspected that the clan leaders of The James Village were chosen based on their scholarly achievements.
That explained why Cindy had been dismissed as a candidate right from the start. Although Cindy was smart, she clearly wasn’t genius material.
No matter how hard she tried back then, her absolute limit probably wouldn’t have gotten her into The Cabinda University.
“That’s not all. Pandora and your grandfather actually met at The Cabinda University.”
Dewitt dropped another massive bombshell.
Claire was stunned.
It wasn’t that she was overly curious
about the romantic lives of her
elders, but everyone always seemed so tight-lipped and secretive whenever her grandfather was mentioned.
“Your father disappeared in Cabinda, and so did your grandfather.”
Dewitt didn’t disappoint her; he kept the revelations coming.
“Then why did this grandfather of mine disappear in Cabinda?”
When Claire had heard Daniel and her grandmother discussing the man earlier, their tone had seemed quite peculiar too.
“Your grandfather claimed he was going to Cabinda to visit friends. After he left, he never returned.”
“At the time, rumors spread that he had eloped with another woman, which was why Pandora never bothered to look for him.”
“Because of this rumor, the relatives of The James Family were quite dissatisfied with the clan leader’s live-in husband.”
Those relatives unilaterally crossed her grandfather off the family registry.
“So that’s what happened,” Claire said, having had no idea about any of this.
However, that era was already fraught with turmoil and instability.
News of her grandfather eloping was actually much more beneficial to The James Family than news of him fleeing overseas.
At the time, The James Family was already being targeted as wealthy landowners and classified under
hostile social categories.
If it came to light that their son-in-law had fled overseas, it would have been a
catastrophic blow to the family.
Therefore, the rumor of the
elopement might have been
intentionally released by The James
Family themselves. It wasn’to
necessarily the truth.
Still, abandoning his wife and children to run away in that era meant he was truly despicable.
So no matter the truth, Claire had no intention of bringing the man up in front of Pandora.
“I’m just worried that Pandora will be in a bad mood,” Dewitt sighed.
If the older woman’s mood plummeted, her health would inevitably deteriorate.
