Chapter 1788
[ 614 words ]
Yesterday she had only bumped her forehead, but today her entire face planted directly onto the concrete.
For a brief second, Claire was genuinely at a loss for what to do.
She wondered if she just shouldn’t appear at the school gates at all.
Otherwise, people on skateboards would probably keep hurtling toward her.
“I’m so sorry, did I scare you?”
The skateboarder scrambled up from the ground, looking at Claire with sheer guilt. “I’m sorry, do we know each other?”
Because the girl’s face was covered in dirt from the fall, Claire couldn’t immediately recognize her.
But the moment the girl lowered the hand shielding her face, Claire immediately spotted the massive, bruised lump on her forehead.
“Oh, it’s you.”
Impressive. The skateboarder had managed to eat pavement in the exact same spot twice!
“It’s me, it’s me! I originally came here to apologize and thank you properly.”
“I didn’t expect to come in so hot and wipe out again.”
The girl looked incredibly embarrassed.
Claire, however, was unfazed. “It’s fine. At least you didn’t give yourself another concussion this time.”
“But wait, they let you out of the hospital this fast with a concussion?”
Claire had taken her pulse yesterday; she knew exactly what kind of condition the girl had been in.
The skateboard girl gave a sheepish, painful smile-her face hurt too much to fully emote.
“No, I sneaked out.”
“I hate hospitals. I’ve had terrible luck my whole life, and whenever I stay in a hospital, my luck just gets worse.”
Claire instinctively took a step back. Seeing the girl stare at her with an accusatory pout, Claire gave a dry laugh. “Sorry, it’s not that I’m afraid your bad luck is contagious.”
The skateboard girl looked like she wanted to cry.
She could clearly tell that was exactly what Claire meant.
“You don’t need to explain. I know my terrible luck is never going to change.”
“My name is Valerie Winthrop. You’re Claire from the medical school, right?”
Valerie Winthrop. The name alone sounded like her parents had hoped she’d have a smooth, perfect life.
Unfortunately, Valerie clearly hadn’t lived up to that blessing.
Claire looked at her. “You know who I am?”
“I didn’t before, but I witnessed your legendary move in the cafeteria.”
Valerie grinned mischievously.
Claire raised an eyebrow, recalling the incident where she smashed a lunch tray over someone’s head.
“It seems my ‘legend’ has spread quite far.”
“Are you a freshman too?” Claire figured only a first-year student would be this recklessly energetic.
Valerie nodded eagerly. “Yep, I’m a

the honor of grabbing dinner together?
“I really, truly want to thank you for getting someone to take me to the hospital yesterday.”
While a mild concussion might not
be life-threatening, if she had been left lying there unconscious and missed the critical window for treatment who knows what could have happened.
Claire, however, felt she hadn’t really done much.
“Even if you had just been left on the ground, you probably would have woken up on your own eventually.”
Valerie’s smile froze completely. “Claire, you’re really good at making jokes.”
It sounded just like the joke of saying a wound would just heal itself if you didn’t go to the hospital.
“If you hadn’t caught me when I passed out, I could have cracked my head open and bled out right there.”
“So I’m genuinely grateful. Please don’t say no.”
“I don’t just want to treat you; I want to invite Norris and Professor Warner too.”
If those two professors hadn’t helped, she wouldn’t have been rushed to the hospital so quickly.
“Honestly, rather than thanking us, it
would be much better if you just
slowed down a bit when riding that skateboard from now on.”
“Especially in crowded places.”
Claire’s advice was entirely sincere.
She really didn’t want to become the collateral damage of Valerie’s recklessness.
And she was pretty sure no one else did, either.
