Chapter 1848
[ 564 words ]
Silas let out a heavy sigh. Quinton had committed his fair share of petty crimes over the years, but he hadn’t done anything truly unforgivable. At least, that’s what Silas told himself.
“You just love taking the blame for everything!” Leo shouted, at a loss for how to reason with his father. Silas was pathologically devoted to Quinton.
People often joked that Quinton was Silas’s oldest son, and Leo was just the neglected youngest. Sometimes, Leo wished his dad would just remarry. But what woman would tolerate a husband who treated a deadbeat brother-in-law better than his own child? Marrying Silas would be a nightmare.
Noticing the gray hair at his father’s temples, Leo softened slightly. “Dad, since you’re retired now, just rest. Once I graduate and start working, I can support you.”
Leo was studying at the police academy. Once he graduated, he’d be an officer too. But a rookie’s salary wouldn’t be enough to support a whole family, and Silas knew that perfectly well.
“I don’t need you to support me. I might have retired early, but I still have my pension. After I rest for a bit, I’ll find another job. I can’t just sit around all day.”
More importantly, neither Leo nor Quinton were married yet. How could he just sit around when he still had to provide for them?
Leo immediately knew his father was thinking about Quinton again. His expression hardened. “Dad, he is in his thirties! How long are you going to take care of him? If he had an ounce of decency, he wouldn’t have dragged you down with him! If you keep bailing him out, he’s just going to get worse!”
Leo had heard of adults leeching off their parents, but leeching off a brother-in-law? It was absurd. As an aspiring cop with a strong sense of justice, Leo despised Quinton. Even if Quinton was nice to him occasionally, Leo knew he was scum.
“I know. I just want to see him get married. Once he settles down, I’ll give him some money and cut him off.”
Leo scoffed coldly. “When he gets
married, you won’t just be
supporting him you’ll be supporting his entire family! If you keep throwing money at him, I’m not coming back here. Since he’s practically your oldest son, he can take care of you when you’re old!”
Leo slammed the door as he stormed out. The neighbors heard the shouting but didn’t bother
intervening. They were used to inet
Silas was a great guy but his blind devotion to his brother-in-law w his fatal flaw. If he didn’t wake up soon, Quinton would ruin him completely.
“Leo! Wait! Take this lunchbox! I bought you some barbecue!” Silas chased after him.
A few neighbors peeked out to watch the drama before ducking back inside. But one older man
finally spoke up. “Sifas, think, y I your boy is right. You can’t keep spoiling that guy. Especially if he gets married-are you really going to financially support a whole new family?”
The man was a retired officer who used to work with Silas. He only spoke up out of pity for his old colleague. “Think about what kind of person he is. It’s bad enough he’s single. If he gets married…”
Before the old man could finish, his wife grabbed him by the ear. “What are you talking about? Maybe a wife will finally straighten him out! Why are you always sticking your nose in other people’s business?”
