Chapter 1851
[ 584 words ]
Claire somewhat understood Valerie Winthrop’s loneliness.
Because she had once been exactly the same.
Though people had constantly thrown themselves at her to be friends, they were only after The James Family’s background and power.
Back when she was still the heiress, she had essentially been everyone’s stepping stone.
It was only after leaving the family that Claire had been able to truly be herself.
She also realized that outside of Sophia, she didn’t seem to have any other close friends.
Shirley hadn’t even sought her out until after she had left the family.
The two had only buried the hatchet because Claire was no longer York’s fiancée.
Actually, no, that wasn’t quite right. It was more because they shared a mutual enemy.
In Shirley’s eyes, the enemy of an enemy was a friend.
But in Claire’s eyes, Shirley simply wasn’t worth the effort to argue with.
Having grown up together, Shirley was incredibly easy to read. One glance was all it took to see right through her.
Since childhood, Shirley had never once beaten her, and Claire couldn’t be bothered to fight back anymore because it was boring.
“Do you want to grab dinner together? My treat!”
Valerie was incredibly generous with the friends she liked.
Which naturally led to people cozying up to her with ulterior motives.
But Valerie had grown up in a privileged environment, and she could spot insincerity from a mile away.
When she encountered those types, she was merciless.
Once someone was thoroughly embarrassed by her, they rarely had the gall to try and kiss up to her again.
After all, she had seen right through them, and they weren’t getting a dime out of her anyway.
“Let me treat you. I know a great little diner with solid food and a genuinely honest owner.”
Since Claire offered, Valerie didn’t even think about refusing.
“Alright, then I’ll get the bill next time. I know a few good spots too.”
Valerie was delightfully straightforward, never playing games.
“Wait for me a second. I need to run back to the dorm to grab my study materials. Finals are coming up soon.”
Soon?
Valerie froze. “Aren’t finals still over a month away?” How was that soon?
She was suddenly feeling stressed.
“A month goes by in a flash. Plus, I might not be able to attend classes every day for this next month.”
“What if something else comes up and delays me?”
Valerie paused. “…You have a point. Maybe I should start studying too.”
As a philosophy major, she had a massive amount of material to memorize daily.
“It’s good to be prepared, but just
manage your time the way it works

If Valerie had gotten into The Cabinda University, she clearly had a good head on her shoulders.
She would have her own rhythm for studying.
“I’ll head back to campus after we eat, then.”
She looked at Claire. “If you’re grabbing your materials, are you not studying on campus?”
Claire nodded. “I’m studying at home. The library and study halls are probably packed by now.”
She preferred studying at her apartment where she could read however she wanted.

After all, her roommates were close, and they’d inevitably end up chatting.
With only a month left in the semester, Claire wanted to review everything thoroughly.
Summer break was two months long anyway; she could relax then.
Besides, she had missed an exorbitant amount of class lately.
She was genuinely worried that if she didn’t study hard and maintain

She also worried it might affect her ability to take time off next semester.
“Could I come study at your place?”
