Chapter 1867
[ 595 words ]
Mr. Winthrop wasn’t blaming Claire for endangering his daughter.
He was simply furious that the higher-ups’ tactical incompetence had put such a brilliant kid in the crosshairs.
“Are you actually worried about her, or just terrified she’s going to get your daughter killed?”
Director Weaver knew every detail of Claire’s situation.
After all, the absolute top brass had issued a direct order to guarantee her survival.
However, there was an internal rift regarding the exact execution of her security protocol.
As a result, Claire’s current protection detail was admittedly lacking.
Naturally, Weaver wasn’t about to admit that catastrophic oversight to Mr. Winthrop.
Strictly speaking, it was a massive dereliction of duty on his end.
Thank God Claire survived; Weaver was currently drafting a massive incident report because of it.
And right on cue, Winthrop’s call had come in.
“I care about my daughter, but I’m not a monster. Of course I care about Claire’s safety too.”
“I just wanted to check in so my own security measures don’t screw up your operational grid.”
Mr. Winthrop knew exactly how to play the game.
He had spent enough years grinding through the political machine to smooth out his rough edges, no longer the stubborn brick wall he was at the academy.
Weaver caught his drift immediately.
He gave Winthrop the sanitized version: “Our hands are tied. She’s young, she’s incredibly busy, and we can’t just lock her in a gilded cage.”
“Besides, you can’t play defense forever. If we don’t obliterate the syndicates targeting her, the threat will never disappear.”
“We’re doing everything we can. Cut us some slack, Winthrop.”
“Look, I know your Valerie caught some strays this time, but the outcome was optimal, right?”
“And you saw the footage. That girl is a force of nature.”
“She’s more than capable of protecting your daughter.”
When Weaver spoke of Claire, his tone was laced with heavy admiration.
Mr. Winthrop scoffed. “The girl is brilliant. It’s you old dinosaurs who are dropping the ball.”
Director Weaver went silent. “…That was completely uncalled for.”
“Fine, we dropped the ball. I’m literally writing an apology report right now.”
“Look, I have to go. We’re buried in work here. Hanging up.”
The line went dead, and Mr. Winthrop stared at his phone, realizing the bastard had actually hung up on him.
He looked annoyed, but there was nothing he could do.
Reading between the lines, he had figured out Weaver’s play.
The government was using Claire as bait to rip the syndicates out by the roots.
They wanted to beat the foreign operatives so mercilessly they’d never dare look at Solenta again and they were using this to purge the
domestic corruption networkto
cleanse the system.
It was a brutal position for Claire. Whether she consented or not, she was a piece
on the board.
Mr. Winthrop couldn’t help but marvel at her intellect and nerve.
If her driving hadn’t been flawless,
and her psychological
anything
less than titanium, net
would have ended with.
He pushed the thought aside. He needed to make sure Valerie stayed locked down
on campus and didn’t wander off.
Sometimes, not being a liability was the greatest virtue of all.
Meanwhile, Dane had already deduced the government’s strategy.
He didn’t hesitate to directly threaten Director Weaver.
“If you can’t guarantee her absolute safety, don’t blame me when I dismantle your entire operation.”
bet
Director Weaver let out a frustrated laugh.
you threaten people now than you were a few years ago
nane, you’re a lot cuter when
Dane remained entirely silent.
Weaver sighed. “I know you’re furious. I am too. But my hands are tied; I didn’t make this call alone.”
“Claire is exceptional. But the more exceptional you are, the more weight you carry.” “Just like you used to.”
“Don’t suffocate her. Letting her forge herself in the fire is the best way to keep her alive.”
