Chapter 1560

Claire’s tone was remarkably relaxed.
Dane?
He affectionately ruffled her hair. “I’ll always save you first.”
But before the four pursuing cars could even make a move, a completely different obstacle blocked their path!
“Baa…”
A herd of goats came tumbling down the steep embankment, crashing directly onto the highway.
Claire and Dane simultaneously jerked their heads toward the slope.
All they saw were scattering rocks; there was no one in sight.
It was impossible to tell if it was orchestrated or a freak accident.
Regardless, the fallen goats completely blocked the road, halting their advance.
Running over a goat would mean stopping to pay heavy damages.
It wasn’t the money they cared about; they feared this was the trap springing shut.
The driver slammed on the brakes, but no one rushed to get out.
Two goats lay on the asphalt, bleating in pain from the fall.
The rest had scrambled to their hooves but were now pacing anxiously across the road, surrounding their injured flock members.
They seemed to want to help but could only bleat helplessly.
“What do we do? Do we get out?”
The young driver glanced at his sergeant.
They were just supposed to be on an escort run; no one expected this level of chaos.
“Sergeant, do you think these goats are a setup?”
The young soldier possessed sharp situational awareness.
As local troops, they had driven this treacherous mountain road countless times.
While running into livestock wasn’t uncommon, encountering a literal avalanche of goats was unheard of.
Even if they did spot strays, it was usually one or two, never an entire herd crashing down at once.
Unless they were phenomenally unlucky, this was deliberate.
Their path was blocked, reversing was impossible, and with four hostile vehicles boxing them in—what were they supposed to do if the enemy was heavily armed?
The sergeant felt a massive headache coming on.
He immediately radioed Officer Miller.
compleport, sir. We’ve hit a
complication at Bottleneck Pass. A herd of goats just rolled down the embankment
“Two goats are injured. We are boxed in by four vehicles. Suspect all four are hostile.”
Officer Miller ordered them to hold their position for thirty minutes.
“Backup will be there in thirty minutes. Ignore the herd.”
“Ram straight through them. We’ll handle the financial compensation later.”
Aside from paying damages, they had no other options.
The sergeant completely agreed with the call.
But a new problem materialized almost instantly.
Dane and Claire also believed paying their way out was the smartest move.
The goats weren’t their problem, but to survive this pass, they had to punch through.
The injured goats couldn’t move, and the hostile cars weren’t going to politely
reverse.
“Punch it!” the sergeant ordered. But just as he

relayed the command, a shepherd came sprinting wildly
down the mountain and out
“My goats!”
Claire’s expression darkened instantly.
She strongly suspected the man had been hiding on the ridge, monitoring the situation.
If they had stopped and gotten out, he would have come down to argue.
But seeing the military vehicle had no intention of stopping, he had to

road to block them.
However, whether this shepherd was working with the hit squad remained unclear.
Logically, no civilian shepherd would be insane enough to scam a military convoy.
If it was a scam, it was a suicidally stupid one.
But with a human physically blocking the road, they couldn’t just floor the gas.
The young driver looked to the sergeant.
The sergeant slapped his forehead in frustration.
He hadn’t anticipated the shepherd.
If they ran, the man would scream hit-and-run and cause a massive scene.
“What’s the call, Sergeant? Do I tell the civilian we’re on a classified mission and order him to clear the animals?”
It seemed to be their only option.
