Chapter 1587
[ 631 words ]
“Wait! Just wait!”
Reese screamed from inside the cabin.
“What do we do now?”
She couldn’t get Quinton on the phone and had no choice but to strategize with the driver.
The driver’s face was a mask of cold fury. “I’ll handle him. You call for backup!”
Reese nodded, opening her mouth to speak, but the driver was already out the door.
He wasn’t just a wheelman; he was a trained operative.
The second the door swung open, he launched himself at Grant.
The two men clashed brutally, trading bone-crushing punches and vicious kicks in a blur of motion.
“What do we do? Do we step in?”
The two undercover cops debated as they watched the brawl from a distance.
“Hold on. They look evenly matched. This might take a minute.”
The officer in the passenger seat had a better vantage point.
He also noticed Reese frantically tapping away on her phone inside the SUV.
“Is she calling for backup? Think they’ve got another extraction team?”
They relayed the situation to Stephen, who was only minutes away.
Hearing the update, Stephen ordered them to keep their eyes glued to the target but told them not to engage just yet.
The officers followed orders, watching the brutal street fight unfold.
The combatants were incredibly evenly matched, making the fight surprisingly gripping to watch.
The two cops even found themselves critiquing their forms.
But while they were distracted by the brawl, Reese seamlessly slid into the driver’s seat, threw the SUV into gear, and peeled out in the opposite direction!
Grant was too busy dodging blows to give chase, even when he realized she was gone.
It was impossible to tell how the driver felt about being abandoned.
The undercover cops, entirely too engrossed in the fistfight, almost lost Reese completely.
“Oh shit! Hit the gas, go, go, go!”
“She’s making a run for it.”
They slammed the accelerator, peeling out after her.
They couldn’t get too close to avoid spooking her, and if Jace hadn’t been actively sharing his GPS. Coordinates from the trunk, they would have lost her for good.
“Damn, she is ruthless. She used her own guy to distract the heavy hitter and bolted with Claire.”
“Look at the route she’s taking. Is she trying to blow past the border checkpoint?”
But to their surprise, Reese pulled into a busy service station and parked.
She ducked into the restroom and emerged a few minutes later dragging a massive, oversized suitcase.
She looked exactly like a tourist or a migrant worker heading across the border— nothing like a desperate fugitive.
She hauled the suitcase toward a long-distance bus, completely abandoning the SUV by the gas pumps.
If Jace were still hiding in the car,
the

stay with the vehicle
A few moments later, someone else approached the SUV.
or
A man wearing a baseball cap pulled low over his face stepped out of a car parked nearby.
He took a slow drag of a cigarette before casually climbing into the driver’s seat of the abandoned SUV.
The two vehicles were parked tightly together in a blind spot, completely shielded from the security cameras.
Both cars were the exact same make and model, making it incredibly difficult to difficult to tell if he
gotten into his own car or
SUV
These operatives had never intended to smuggle Claire out of the country today; they just needed to hide her.
Reese’s frantic escape had been nothing but a perfectly executed smokescreen!
Jace quietly texted Stephen from the trunk.
Meanwhile, the two cops tracking Reese assumed she had stuffed Claire inside the massive suitcase.
Only Jace knew a new driver had taken the wheel.
The new driver was significantly heavier than Reese, and Jace had felt the
suspension shift the second he climbed in.
He pinged Stephen, who was already pulling into the service station with his team.
Stephen immediately radioed the two undercover cops, ordering them to take Reese down immediately.
If she made it across the border, they would never get her back.
