Chapter 1586
[ 661 words ]
“You know exactly what kind of scum they are!”
“I might be a bastard, but I still know that loyalty to the country comes first!”
Gideon scoffed. “If you had that kind of moral compass, you wouldn’t be in this line of work.”
“Stop acting like a saint when your hands are just as dirty!”
“I’m telling you, Zane, let her go. If this girl is as important as you say, we’re both going to be eating prison food when the cops show up!”
Truthfully, hearing that the target was a medical prodigy made Gideon second-guess his involvement.
If he had known, he would have demanded triple the payout. The risk was astronomical, and the money didn’t match the danger.
No wonder Zane had been dragging his feet—he was definitely trying to extort more cash.
“I tried to warn you. If you’re dead set on digging your own grave, go ahead. Keep pushing, Gideon, and enjoy your all-inclusive stay behind bars!”
Gideon was notoriously stubborn. He had come prepared and wasn’t going to back down easily.
Since he had brought more muscle than Zane had on hand, he had the tactical advantage in a firefight and wasn’t intimidated in the slightest.
Tempers flared, and the two crews actually started throwing punches.
Reese and the driver watched in mounting panic. What were they supposed to do now?
If they didn’t run right this second, it would be too late!
Moving in perfect synchronization, Reese and the driver bolted for the SUV.
As for Zachary, the idiot who claimed he had influence with his cousin had proven to be completely useless!
They weren’t taking him with them.
“Zane! Boss! Stop fighting! Reese and the others are making a run for it!”
Zachary’s sharp eyes caught the driver covering Reese as they retreated, and panic seized him.
The cops were breathing down their necks, and these gangsters were too busy swinging at each other to notice!
“Go stop them,” Zane ordered his most trusted lieutenant.
The man was a former underground boxer from Southeast Asia and absolutely lethal in a fight.
He had only retreated to this quiet border town after crossing the wrong people.
Zane had taken him in, earning his absolute loyalty.
Sending him wasn’t just because he hit like a freight train; he was also a phenomenal getaway driver.
If he went after them, they weren’t getting far.
“On it.”
The enforcer’s name was Grant Brooks, Zane had brought him into the inner circle partly because they shared a last name but mostly because Grant was a savage asset.
The SUV was tearing down the road, the driver weaving erratically in sheer desperation.
The police had finally arrived. One unit cordoned off the gang war, while the other tore off in pursuit of Claire.
They knew a man as calculating as Quinton would have built contingencies into this escape plan.
That was exactly why the driver and Reese had bolted without a second thought.
The authorities were hoping to use them to reel in the rest of the network, though it was a massive gamble.
Undercover units floored the gas, tailing Reese’s vehicle.
But Grant was a different breed of
reckless. He drove like a maniacnet
fully intent on running the fleeing SUV right off the road.
The trailing officers immediately radioed Stephen. “Captain James, someone’s trying to intercept them Looks like one of Zane’s men What’s the call?”
“Run him off the road! Don’t let him interfere with the pursuit!”
Stephen wanted Grant neutralized, but the enforcer was driving like a man with a death wish.
The officers radioed back, shouting that they couldn’t get a clean angle to stop him. Grant swerved violently, nearly sending the SUV ahead of him careening into the river.
The driver slammed on the brakes, sending Reese smashing her forehead against the dashboard, drawing blood.
Grant leaped out of his car and marched over, hammering his fists against the SUV’s windows.
If they didn’t unlock the doors, he looked ready to rip the vehicle apart with his bare hands.
“Fucking lunatic!” Reese screamed from the passenger seat.
When they refused to open the doors, Grant scooped up a heavy rock and wound
up to shatter the glass.
