Chapter 1585
[ 622 words ]
Fortunately, Quinton Graves was the kind of man who planned three steps ahead.
If Zane Brooks wasn’t going to play ball, there was always his biggest rival!
The moment Zane refused to hand over Claire’s border pass, the driver had sent a covert signal to Gideon Gantry’s camp.
Gideon’s crew should be arriving any minute now.
Zane had absolutely no idea that Quinton had anticipated his betrayal.
It wasn’t until Gideon Gantry rolled up with an armed crew that Zane realized he was entirely surrounded.
“Gideon, what the hell is this? Don’t forget whose territory you’re standing on!”
Zane and Gideon had always been at each other’s throats. They had their minor skirmishes, but they generally kept to their own sides of the street.
“Take it easy, Zane. No need to get worked up. I just heard my VIP clients wandered into your backyard, so I came to pick them up myself.”
The two men ran the exact same rackets and had a long-standing gentleman’s agreement not to poach each other’s clientele.
Gideon usually wouldn’t be caught dead on Zane’s turf.
God only knew what kind of payout Quinton had promised him to break the truce.
Zane glared at him, his eyes practically freezing over. “You’re doing this on purpose, aren’t you?”
“How much did that bastard Quinton pay you?”
It was the only logical explanation. Quinton was throwing money around to spark a turf war.
If everything had gone smoothly on Zane’s end and they crossed the border quietly, fine.
But the second Zane stalled them, they immediately called in Gideon to muscle the prize away.
Gideon was infinitely greedier than Zane.
And he didn’t give a damn about underworld etiquette.
If they let Gideon take Claire today, she was definitely ending up in Sundara.
Zane’s expression shifted as he calculated whether he should just call the police himself.
But calling the cops was basically torching his own livelihood.
He wasn’t confident he could walk away without the authorities putting him in cuffs, too.
“Come on, Zane, we’re brothers. You’ve had your feast; shouldn’t you let the rest of us scrape the bowl?”
“The fact that they reached out to
me means they don’t trust you
anymore. And now you’re honet
them hostage? Do you ever want to debusiness again
Gideon was an absolute scumbag. The only reason he could pressure Zane was because Zane actually cared about his reputation.
Gideon, on the other hand, was a shameless parasite who couldn’t care less what people thought of him.
“I hear you’re out here jacking up prices at the final hour. That’s a bad look, man. Lose your credibility and no one’s going to knock on your door again.”
Gideon deliberately twisted the knife into Zane’s pride.
Zane saw the writing on the wall. If they shot it out right now, the only winners would be the Sundara operatives.
He shot Gideon a venomous look. “I already gave them the border passes. You can take them and go.”
“But the girl in the car stays.”
Gideon had no idea who the target was.
Curious, he glanced between Reese and the driver.
Reese immediately spoke up. “No way. The girl in that car is the whole point of this operation!”
“Gideon, why do you think I stalled them? They’re trying to smuggle out one of Solenia’s top medical geniuses!”
“You’re Solenian! You can’t seriously help them do this!”
A medical genius?
A glint sparked in Gideon’s eyes. Suddenly, Zane’s obsession with the girl made perfect sense.
“Are you keeping her around to fix your little fertility issue?”
It was an open secret in the underworld that Zane fired blanks.
He had a stunningly beautiful wife,
but
er health was fragile and wet
Zane’s plumbing issues they had never been able to have kids.
What kind of doctor was this genius? Could she actually cure him?
“Screw you, I’m not infertile!” Zane looked ready to brain Gideon with a brick.
“I just refuse to let Sundara steal one of our brightest minds!”
