Chapter 1588
[ 640 words ]
“Copy that, Captain!” The two officers immediately moved in to apprehend Reese.
Reese had just hoisted her heavy suitcase into the luggage compartment of the bus when the cops locked onto her.
Her instincts were razor-sharp. She sensed the danger and tried to bolt, but the officers tackled her hard against the side of the bus.
They wrenched her arms behind her back as onlookers scrambled out of the way, creating a wide circle around the commotion.
Reese hadn’t expected to be pinned so quickly. Her only hope was that her capture would buy enough time for her team to get Claire to a secure location!
Her total lack of resistance completely caught the cops off guard.
“Who is she?”
“Is she a fugitive?”
“Such a young, pretty girl.”
“This bus goes straight to Kaston. You think she was trying to flee the country?”
The bystanders whispered among themselves.
Reese’s face darkened. Her eyes darted around the crowd until she locked onto a young child nearby, then she violently threw her weight in that direction.
“Move!”
No one expected the woman who had just surrendered so quietly to suddenly lash out.
The child froze in sheer terror, completely paralyzed.
One of the officers instinctively lunged to pull the kid out of harm’s way, momentarily loosening his grip on Reese.
The other officer couldn’t hold her down alone. In a flash, she produced a scalpel and slashed viciously toward his eyes.
The officer’s pupils shrank, and he jerked his head back just in time to avoid a fatal strike, but the blade sliced deeply across his nose.
By the time he recovered, Reese was already sprinting away.
But she barely made it five steps before a brutal sweeping kick swept her legs out from under her.
The impact was merciless, sending Reese crashing face-first onto the concrete. The sound of her teeth shattering against the pavement echoed sharply, and blood spilled from her mouth.
In the next second, a man drove his knee into her lower back, completely immobilizing her.
With a swift, practiced motion, he disarmed her of the scalpel.
“Get off me!” Reese snarled, humiliated that her desperate gamble had ended like this.
Was this guy another undercover cop?
The man pinning her down wasn’t police, but he was a highly trained military veteran.
Being taken down by him was hardly an insult.
“Thank you, man. What precinct are you with?” The officer with the bleeding nose hurried over, breathless.
The man smiled and shook his head. “Don’t mention it. I just discharged. Actually I’m heading to the station.

“You guys are PD, right?”
The fact that he clocked them instantly spoke volumes about his situational
awareness.
His takedown had been so clean and efficient that even the injured officer felt a twinge of inadequacy.

Without missing a beat, he whipped out his cuffs and locked them tight around Reese’s wrists.
While the chaos unfolded, the man in the baseball cap had quietly driven the SUV out of the service station.
Stephen and Dane were already hot on his trail.
With their mission complete, the two officers hauled Reese toward their vehicle to head back to the precinct.
The veteran tagged along and hopped into the back seat with them.
“Captain James, there’s a transferred vet heading to the station to report for duty. Did you know about this?”
“We’re bringing him in with us.”
The injured officer reported the situation to Stephen over the radio.
Stephen was well aware of the new arrival and had already approved the transfer.
“Did you check his ID? Is his name Zeke Xanders?”
“Yes, sir, checked it. Recon specialist. The guy is a machine.”
“If he hadn’t stepped in, we probably would’ve botched the arrest,” the injured officer admitted quickly.
“Bring him back to the station with you.”
“Stay sharp on the road. I got word from the Vice Commander’s unit
that someone managed toet

“If a hit squad shows up to break Reese out, things are going to get ugly fast.”
