Chapter 1589
[ 679 words ]
Hearing that the veteran possessed exceptional combat skills brought Stephen a small measure of relief.
He had been genuinely concerned that his two officers might get completely overwhelmed.
On the road back to the precinct with Reese, their vehicle was suddenly intercepted.
While the attackers aggressively tried to run them off the road like a typical hijacking, anyone with a brain could see they were here for Reese.
No, that wasn’t exactly right-they were here to silence her!
The attacking vehicle smashed into them with lethal intent, showing absolutely no hesitation.
The injured officer in the passenger seat saw stars as the impact rattled his skull, while the driver was thrown brutally against the window, blood pouring down his forehead.
The hit squad’s objective was crystal clear: eliminate Reese.
Reese herself had sustained injuries in the crash. As the police cruiser was battered until it was virtually undrivable, the assailants made no move to spare her.
The man in the passenger seat of the attacking car flicked open a lighter, ignited it, and tossed it straight at the crumpled cruiser.
The client had made it very clear: the woman in the car could not leave this road alive.
It finally dawned on Reese that the Syndicate wanted her to die rather than be taken alive by Solenian authorities.
She knew the identities of too many deep-cover assets planted across the country.
If she broke under interrogation, the damage to Sundara’s intelligence network would be catastrophic.
Logically, she should have ended her own life right then to honor her country’s investment in her.
But Reese refused to die like this!
She was so close to finally retiring to her homeland, and instead of extracting her, they were tossing her aside like garbage. Why should she take a bullet for them?
She had bled for her country!
Reese hesitated, torn between accepting a martyr’s death or waiting for the Syndicate’s cleanup crew to finish the job.
Even if she miraculously survived, what future was left for her?
The lighter bounced off the hood without immediately igniting the vehicle.
But fuel was pooling rapidly beneath the chassis. A catastrophic explosion was only seconds away.
Handcuffed, Reese had zero chance of saving herself.
The only person in the car who wasn’t incapacitated was Zeke.
Zeke had already deduced the hit squad’s motive, which made keeping Reese alive his absolute top priority.
He had to pull her out before the entire car went up in flames!
Kicking his door open, he grabbed Reese by the collar and dragged her out onto the asphalt.
He moved with brutal efficiency, ignoring whatever injuries she had sustained in the crash.
His real concern was the two officers trapped in the front seats.

But when he sprinted around to the driver’s side to extract the other officer, the man weakly shook his head.
Blood streamed down the officer’s forehead, pooling at his lips. When he spoke, his teeth were stained crimson.
“Leave me. Get out of here. It’s going to blow.”
“No!” Zeke refused to accept that.
He had run countless ops and pulled people out of the fire more times than he could
count.
He wasn’t going to let anyone die on his watch!
“Go. Please. Get that spy to the precinct. I’m stuck.”
The officer smiled through the pain, gesturing weakly toward his legs.

“Move!” the officer screamed as the flames roared higher, aggressively shooing Zeke away.
Gritting his teeth, Zeke wedged his hands under the crushed dashboard trapping the officer’s legs.
Veins bulged in his neck as he poured every ounce of his strength into lifting the twisted metal. “Hurry!”
The officer stared at him in shock, awed by his sheer physical power, but his legs were completely numb.
If they both got out and the hit squad realized they were still alive, they would be sitting ducks.
If those men came back to finish the job, they were all dead!
No matter how strong Zeke was, dragging dead weight would get them all killed!
