Chapter 1590
[ 649 words ]
And they still had Reese to worry about, who could turn on them at any second.
Sensing the officer’s quiet resolve to give up, Zeke stopped arguing. Instead, he threw himself into the flames to tear the man free.
Fire licked at his clothes, but he moved as if he couldn’t even feel the heat.
The officer’s legs were completely dead. Zeke hauled him out of the wreckage, and the man dragged his mangled, bloodied legs across the dirt, rolling frantically into the ditch to put out the flames.
Zeke threw himself to the ground, rolling hard to smother the fire eating at his own jacket.
A deafening roar tore through the air as the cruiser erupted in a massive fireball!
The shockwave rattled their bones. The survivors lay in the dirt, gasping for air, purely thankful to still be breathing.
But a split second later, the sharp crack of a gunshot shattered the silence, proving the hit squad hadn’t gone far at all.
They had been waiting. Watching them struggle, survive, and then…
A bullet tore through the air, aimed squarely at the center of Reese’s forehead.
In a heartbeat, the young officer with the crushed legs marshaled the last ounce of his strength and threw his body over Reese.
Reese was unharmed, but the officer took the fatal hit!
Watching the young cop he had just pulled from the fire sacrifice himself to protect a terrorist, Zeke’s face contorted in absolute fury.
He dug the dead officer’s phone from his pocket and found Stephen’s number.
“Captain James, we’re under heavy fire. We need immediate medevac and backup!” Having Stephen call dispatch would be infinitely faster than trying to explain their coordinates to a dispatcher.
Zeke then reached down and unholstered the fallen officer’s sidearm. When the sniper fired again, Zeke beat him to the punch, dropping the shooter with a single, lethal shot.
A seasoned recon specialist, Zeke’s marksmanship was flawless.
One shot, one kill.
Seeing his partner drop, the driver of the hit squad’s car slammed on the gas and fled, too terrified to stick around.
Zeke had seemed completely unkillable. They had thrown everything at him and still failed. The mission was officially botched!
Watching the vehicle tear off into the distance, Zeke didn’t pursue. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to, but his own injuries made running impossible.
Besides, their only ride had just been incinerated in the explosion. How was he supposed to chase them?
Zeke’s lethal accuracy was the only reason they weren’t all dead.
That, and the wailing sirens of approaching backup.
The sirens had been the final nail in the coffin for the hit squad, sending the driver into a total panic.
Stephen had allowed his two
officers to transport Reese with
Zeke, fully aware of how dangnet
a was and how fanatical The
Syndicate could be.
He wasn’t about to gamble with his men’s lives.
Calling in local backup had been a standard precaution.
He never expected that precaution to be the only thing keeping the survivors alive!
Reese lay completely frozen under the weight of the man who had thrown himself into the line of fire for her.
Warm blood splattered across her cheek.
The officer made a sickening
gurgling sound in the back of hisset
throat, completely unable to form words before his eyes tolled back and he lost consciousness .net
She was a nurse. Her immediate, primal instinct was to stop the bleeding.
But when she raised her hands, the heavy steel of the handcuffs pulled her up short.
“Take these off! I can stop the bleeding!”
Reese was genuinely shaken by the Solenian officer’s sacrifice.
All she wanted right now was to save his life.
Zeke stared at her with dead eyes, completely unmoving.
“Please, I just want to help him!”
She knew the cop had likely only saved her because she was a high-value asset.
But she had spent years working in hospitals. She had taken lives, yes, but she couldn’t just sit there and watch the man who saved hers bleed out in the dirt
Finally, Zeke moved. He ripped the keys from the unconscious officer’s belt and
unhooked the cuffs.
