Chapter 1214
When they arrived at city hall, they pulled a number and waited in line.
Coincidentally, the clerk handling their paperwork was Susan, the same warm-
hearted woman who had offered Claire water last time.
Susan recognized her immediately and offered a bright smile. “Hey, it’s you! Back to finish the paperwork?”
“Yes, ma’am,” Claire replied politely.
She handed over her documents.
As Susan took the papers, her eyes subtly scanned Felix up and down.
She verified their IDs, clicked through her computer system, and then gave Claire
an apologetic look. “I’m so sorry, my system seems to be acting up. I’m going to run and get someone from IT to take a look. Please wait just a moment.”
Claire hadn’t expected a glitch, but she could only nod and agree.
Susan got up and left to find her colleague.
Claire and Felix sat in silence.
Nearly half an hour passed before Susan hurried back. “I am so, so sorry. The IT guy was on a break and just got back. He’s coming over to reboot the system now. Do you mind waiting just a little longer?”
Claire opened her mouth to speak, but Felix beat her to it.
“It’s fine. Take your time,” he said calmly.
He wasn’t in any rush.
If the computer stayed broken forever, that was fine by him.
Claire frowned, a suspicion creeping into her mind. Had this woman been bribed?
But Susan was incredibly sweet, fetching Claire another cup of water and apologizing profusely while anxiously checking her phone.
Eventually, the IT guy showed up, tapped a few keys, and announced the system was fixed.
Susan finally sat back down and sighed. “Are you both absolutely sure about this? Would you like to try mediation first?”
“No,” Claire answered immediately.
Felix paused for a beat before murmuring, “Whatever she says.”
Susan pressed on with the mandatory questions. “Is this divorce entirely voluntary? Have you reached an agreement on the division of assets and debt? Is anyone being coerced?”
“No,” Claire said firmly.
Felix hesitated for a few agonizing seconds before finally saying, “No.”
Susan then slid the final documents across the desk for their signatures.
Claire signed her name with swift, decisive strokes.
Felix stared at her signature for a long moment. Eventually, he picked up the pen and signed his own.
Susan collected the papers,
stamped their marriage certificates void, and handed them their fresh divorce decrees with both hands. “Here are your divorce certificates and the settlement agreement. Your marriage certificates have been voided and returned. Please keep these safe. Have a good day.”
It was finally over.
After verifying the documents, Claire thanked Susan and stood up to leave.
She didn’t wait for Felix.
From this moment on, she and Felix Quigley had absolutely nothing to do with each other.
By the time Felix walked out of the building, Claire had already driven off.
She hadn’t lingered for a second.
Felix stood alone on the steps of city hall for a very long time.
She really didn’t want him anymore.
The tiny thread that still connected them had been completely severed.
Inside city hall, a colleague leaned over to Susan. “You totally stalled on purpose earlier, didn’t you? Trying to get them to reconcile?”
Susan scoffed. “No way! I saw how heartbroken that poor girl was when she got
stood up last time. That marriage was clearly miserable. Divorce is a blessing for her!”
“Then why were you dragging your feet?”
At that, Susan let out a frustrated
sigh. “I was trying to buy some time for a guy who’s like a younger brother to me! He’s not getting any younger and he absolutely refuses to date. I’m the only one stressing over his love life.”
Her colleague laughed. “So you were abusing your authority to play matchmaker!”
“I just think she’s a wonderful girl,
and she’s gorgeous. I wanted to give him a shot, Susan grumbled, getting worked up again. “But the idiot blew He didn’t answer my calls, didn’t reply to my texts! He totally missed a golden opportunity! I could strangle him!”
