Chapter 1538
[ 652 words ]
Given the extreme risks of running an illegal bio-lab on Solenian soil, Kael knew exactly who to avoid and who could absolutely never be provoked.
The operatives of Special Security were like bloodhounds; once they caught a scent, they would relentlessly hunt their prey to the ends of the earth. They were the absolute last people the syndicate wanted to encounter.
Kael never imagined they would unknowingly invite the devil straight through their front door.
Kael shot a venomous glare at Zeke, his teeth grinding together. “You really know how to drag a catastrophe right to our doorstep!”
Zeke scoffed coldly. “How was I supposed to know who he was? Just kill him and be done with it!”
Kael flushed with humiliated rage. “Have you spent so long rotting in this miserable Solenian backwater that you’ve forgotten your own bloodline, Zeke?”
To Kael, Zeke’s insolent tone was a blatant provocation, almost as if he were siding with the Solenians.
Was the rat preparing to defect?
“I know exactly what blood runs through my veins!”
If he hadn’t known, would he have endured being ostracized by Solenian society and tossed into an orphanage?
The Daybreak Syndicate had found him, funded him, and trained him, yet a deep, conflicting part of Zeke still felt tied to Solenia.
But he had boarded a sinking ship and couldn’t get off. He had been a captive to their agenda for decades.
At this point, he didn’t even know what he was fighting for anymore.
Kael couldn’t possibly comprehend how deeply Solenia had impacted Zeke.
Despite the syndicate’s relentless indoctrination during his youth, the brainwashing had never fully taken root.
While Zeke always carried out his missions, he constantly emitted the aura of a wild dog ready to slip its leash at any moment.
“So, Zeke was a Sundaran sleeper agent this whole time,” Officer Miller muttered, the betrayal tasting like ash in his mouth.
He had never understood why Zeke helped the syndicate. The man lived a remarkably ascetic life.
Zeke had always told Miller he only wanted to earn enough to get by.
He was older, unmarried, with no children-he had absolutely no need for vast wealth.
So it was never about the money. It was purely about blood and misguided loyalty.
Kael realized this wasn’t the time for an internal dispute. He turned his attention back to Silas. “I don’t care what dynasty you belong to. No that you’ve stepped foot in this cave you’ll die in it!”
Silas stared at the man. The sheer arrogance was staggering.
He genuinely wondered where a rat found such unearned confidence.
They were standing on Solenian soil!
“If I don’t report back within three days, a massive military sweep will burn this mountain to the ground.”
“Not a single one of you will make it out alive.”
That had been Silas’s explicit protocol with Director Garrison before deployment.
“Who says we have to run? Perhaps we won’t need to leave at all.”
“The Aila Highlands have always been a graveyard. No matter how many men you send, the mountains will swallow them whole.”
Kael was fiercely confident in his trap, but that confidence shattered when he realized his hidden trump card the airborne Dreamweed toxin was having absolutely zero effect on Silas’s team.
“Is he seriously waiting for us to start hallucinating?” Claire whispered to Dane,
noticing the bizarre lack of action from the enemy.
Dane hadn’t even realized the cave was rigged with gas.
“Are you saying we were poisoned the moment we walked in?”
“Yeah. Look over there. They have automated vents pumping aerosolized Dreamweed toxin into the air.”
Claire casually gestured toward the cave walls.
Hidden directly beneath the floodlights were industrial gas dispersers.
Kael’s subtle nod to his subordinate earlier hadn’t been an order to flank them; it was an order to crank the toxin dosage to maximum, realizing Silas’s Then weren’t succumbing to the initial wave.
Unfortunately for Kael, Silas had immediately intercepted the man.
Claire and Dane hadn’t bothered to lower their voices.
The casual exchange echoed clearly, heard not only by Silas’s team but by Kael and
his men as well.
