Chapter 1539
[ 664 words ]
“Who the hell are you two?”
These two clearly weren’t Special Security operatives.
Especially the delicate-looking girl. Bringing a civilian woman on a high-risk mountain op? These spoiled Solenian elites truly were as arrogant and useless as the rumors suggested.
“Who I am is irrelevant. What matters is that you’re cultivating Dreamweed to extract the fruit’s fluids, refining it into a weaponized neurotoxin, aren’t you?”
Claire wasn’t looking at Kael; her gaze was fixed dead on the scientist in the pristine white coat.
This man was undeniably the mastermind behind the black-site laboratory.
“How do you know that?” Dr. Aris’s eyes narrowed, his entire demeanor shifting.
They had assumed this tactical squad was acting on vague rumors of an illegal facility and had simply come to clear it out.
Yet, somehow, one of them knew the exact biochemical properties of the Dreamweed neurotoxin.
Had the earlier leak of the experimental strain actually been intercepted and analyzed, leading the military straight to their door?
“Dreamweed requires an incredibly specific, hostile environment to survive. Finding even a single wild sprout is a miracle. A harvest this size implies a highly sophisticated artificial cultivation program.”
Dr. Aris raised an eyebrow. “I didn’t expect someone so young to possess such advanced botanical and biochemical knowledge.”
“Since you comprehend the complexities of the Dreamweed, why don’t you stay here and become my lab assistant?”
“When the trials are successfully concluded, I’ll ensure your name is on the research.”
It was a staggering display of scientific detachment. Dr. Aris genuinely wanted to recruit her in the middle of a Mexican standoff.
Men utterly consumed by their research truly possessed zero grasp of social reality or the concept of war.
“Wow, thank you so much for the generous offer,” Claire replied, her voice dripping with biting sarcasm.
Ever since breaking free from the suffocating expectations of the James family in Apex, Claire had completely taken the brakes off her personality.
She spoke without filters or reservations, no longer needing to play the role of the docile aristocrat that her adoptive mother, Octavia, had demanded.
Octavia had only trained her to be a polished trophy to elevate the family’s social standing, never caring about Claire’s actual happiness or well-being.
While living under the James family’s roof had been restrictive, a truly exceptional survivor knew how to wear whatever mask was necessary.
“What do you mean?” The doctor, clearly not a native Solenian, completely missed the heavy layers of sarcasm.
She said thank you, but the sharp glint in her eyes suggested something entirely different.
“Well,
badly, why don’t you let everyonenet
ace you want me to stay so
else go?” Claire countered smoothly, a mocking smile playing on hertips.
“That’s out of the question.” Dr. Aris wasn’t completely oblivious to leverage.
“But, if these men are your friends, I’ll allow you the privilege of personally administering the experimental toxins to them.”
“You can even have the honor of logging their biometric decay.”
Claire almost laughed out loud at the sheer absurdity of the statement.
Did this psycho even realize what he was saying?
“You are too kind.”
This time, the sheer venom in her tone pierced even Dr. Aris’s thick skull. She was mocking him.
“If you refuse my generosity, then you’ll simply be strapped to a table as a test subject like the rest of them.”
“You can either be my assistant or my guinea pig. Any intelligent person knows which to choose.”
Dr. Aris was supremely confident.
Nobody wanted to die.
A while back, Zeke had dragged in a lost trekker who turned out to be a medical practitioner.
Dr. Aris had offered him a position
as a grunt laborer. The man had
vehemently refused at first. But after watching
that happened t
the test
subjects, he had dropped to his
knees, sobbing and begging for the
assistant job.

Dr. Aris hadn’t shown mercy then, subjecting the man to the first round of lethal trials
anyway.
He only administered the antidote right before the man’s brain
completely melted. Now, the net

doctor worked in the lab as the lab as mindless, terrified puppet.
He obeyed every command without a single whisper of hesitation.
This beautiful girl was intriguing. Dr. Aris didn’t just want to break her into a puppet.
