Chapter 1580
[ 687 words ]
Graves couldn’t be certain if the police were incompetent or flawlessly executing a trap.
He only had two plays left: stick to the original plan, link up with Reese’s boat, and pray they all slipped across the border together.
Or, he could deliberately break cover, pulling the entire wrath of the Solenian police force onto himself, thereby guaranteeing Reese could smuggle Claire into Sundara.
If he completed the mission this way, he would likely die.
But if he failed and lost the target, the Daybreak Syndicate would hunt him to the ends of the earth and execute him anyway.
Graves hesitated for only a fraction of a second before making his choice.
What if he pulled off the extraction and somehow survived the manhunt?
His status within Daybreak would instantly skyrocket to legendary heights.
Within the Syndicate, true absolute power was only granted to those at the very top.
Graves harbored a dark, suffocating thirst for vengeance.
He absolutely refused to die in this miserable country.
Moving with calculated precision, Graves deliberately stepped out of the shadows, making an amateur mistake.
Instantly, he felt the crosshairs lock onto him.
Officer Miller’s tactical units had been sweeping the reservoir for hours, and the second Graves exposed himself, they descended like wolves.
But Graves was a phantom. Even with a massive perimeter, Miller’s heavily armed squads struggled to corner him; the man was as slippery as a ghost.
The military wasn’t about to let their prime target vanish again. Miller aggressively pushed his men forward, initiating a brutal pursuit through the dense brush.
Miles away, Stephen monitored the chaotic radio chatter, his jaw clenching tightly.
Graves had seen right through their trap.
The man was an absolute nightmare to pin down.
Realizing that Graves wasn’t going to lead them to the boat, Stephen made the split- second decision to close the net.
Nothing else mattered. Claire could not remain in hostile hands for another second!
Stephen barked the order, and the hidden police units surrounding the water violently surged into action.
Jace was the closest operative to the target; his only mission was to ensure Claire’s survival.
He had been shadowing the boat from the shoreline, fully expecting them to dock right into his waiting ambush.
Instead, he watched in sheer
disbelief
as the boat veered sharply, cutting the engine and docking on the completely opposite side of thề reservoir.
Realizing his catastrophic miscalculation, Jace didn’t hesitate.
He threw himself into the freezing water of the reservoir and began swimming with terrifying speed toward the opposite shore.
“What the hell is that?” Zachary leaned over the railing, staring intensely at the dark water. “Is that a massive fish?”
Reese barely glanced up. “This reservoir is famous for its clean water. It’s not surprising.”
Unpolluted water naturally held massive wildlife!
But Zeke’s eyes narrowed, his survival instincts screaming as he peered into the gloom. “That’s not a fish. That’s a person!”
All the color instantly drained from Zachary’s face. “The cops? Did they track us?”
“Impossible. We lost them miles

Zeke’s expression turned incredibly grim. “What if they let us go on purpose?”
“Think about it! They don’t just want the girl back. They’re using us to draw Graves out of hiding!”
Reese didn’t need Zeke to explain Graves’s value; she fully understood the mastermind’s worth.
“Are they really coming for us?”
If they were a tactical hit squad, why was there only one man in the water? Swimming across a massive reservoir to execute a raid seemed completely insane. “Maybe it’s just a local taking a night swim and crossing the lake?”
It was a laughably desperate hypothesis, but Zachary was terrified of the alternative.
“Let’s find out,” Reese said coldly, drawing her suppressed pistol from her holster. Did they really think she would walk into an extraction unarmed?
If she relied solely on Graves to protect her, she would never live to see her homeland again.
“Don’t do it!” Zeke hissed, his hand shooting out to violently grip her wrist.
“If that man isn’t a cop, firing that weapon will instantly broadcast our position to anyone listening in the dark.”
If she pulled that trigger, their chance of escaping would evaporate instantly.
It was tactical suicide.
Having operated deep within Solenia for years; Zeke had thoroughly
absorbed their terrifyingly calculated
approach to survival
