Chapter 1581
[ 613 words ]
“So, what do we do now?”
With the shore fast approaching, they couldn’t exactly deliver themselves straight
into a trap.
Reese looked absolutely livid.
“We get out of here first!” The driver’s immediate instinct was to run.
Quinton Graves had already planned an escape route for them anyway, so why waste time?
Jace James swam with everything he had but couldn’t match the group’s speed.
As soon as they hit the shore, a reception team was waiting.
Although the police were positioned by the water, the crew there to extract Reese’s group was heavily armed and highly skilled.
Their suppressive fire was intense, the unmistakable hallmark of desperate outlaws.
The authorities had prepared for resistance, but they were still caught off guard by the sheer firepower.
A fierce firefight broke out immediately, leaving Claire unsure whether to open her eyes or keep playing dead.
Jace reached the shore and quickly melted into the shadows.
Unarmed, there was no way he could charge in blindly.
He kept his eyes locked on Claire, ready to rush in the second the Clan Successor was in real danger.
For the moment, Claire was being carried on Zachary’s back.
With covering fire raining down around them, Zachary sprinted with Claire toward a pre-staged SUV.
Reese threw the door open, helping Zachary shove Claire into the backseat.
She then turned, intending to grab the driver so they could all escape together.
Unfortunately, the driver had been slowed down by the rugged terrain and was already in police custody.
Seeing Reese glance back, he shook his head at her.
“Go. Leave me.”
Reese read the words perfectly from his lips.
Her expression shifted. She wanted to argue that they had escaped together and needed to leave together.
But reason coldly shut that impulse down.
Reese knew if she didn’t leave right this second, she wouldn’t be leaving at all.
The driver was caught, and there was nothing she could do to save him.
Forcing a rescue attempt would only end with her in cuffs too.
“Take care,” Reese whispered before ducking into the vehicle.
The moment her door slammed shut, the SUV tore away.
Jace seized the chaotic opportunity and latched onto the back of the vehicle, slipping into the trunk.
The occupants were too frantic looking out the windows to notice the slight shift in weight in the rear.
Two other vehicles escorted the SUV, driving them straight toward Ridgeview.
The border town was a lawless, chaotic mess making it the perfect staging ground to smuggle
Se out of the country.
Of course, pulling that off required deep connections.
The roads were heavily patrolled by armed guards, making it incredibly easy to get caught.
Crossing the border through Montara required the help of a local smuggler.
Once they reached the town, the getaway driver and Zachary took them straight to the local boss.
Since Sundara had paid a premium, the smuggler had agreed to facilitate their escape well in advance.
“Zane, it’s me, Zachary.”
Zachary offered the smuggler a goofy, desperate grin.
Surprisingly, the two men shared the same last name and actually hailed from the same village.
The local boss was known to everyone as Zane Brooks.
Zane blinked in surprise when he recognized Zachary.
“Kid, aren’t you on the run from the law?”
“What are you doing here? Trying to skip the country too?”
Most fugitives loved making a run for the border, a fact Zane was intimately familiar
with.
But that only worked for the wealthy

“I already cut a deal with them,” Zachary said, pointing toward Reese and the driver.
“They’re taking me to Sundara. They paid me a solid cut to help them kidnap someone.”
Zane scrutinized Reese and the driver. “Who did they take?”
Foreigners coming into Solenia to snatch someone up just rubbed him the wrong way.
