Chapter 1599
[ 605 words ]
“I am so sorry, Captain James. We’ve done everything we can.”
Director Brooks, the head of the surgical department, had led the resuscitation efforts himself, but they were out of options. They had to call it.
“I have a specialist on the way. She’s a surgeon. She might be able to pull Lucas through.”
Stephen wasn’t making promises he couldn’t keep. He was already rehearsing what he was going to say to Lucas’s family.
Lucas was supposed to be getting engaged soon. How was he going to look his fiancée in the eye?
There was no denying the operation was a massive success. They had dismantled a trafficking ring and captured a high-level Sundara spy.
But the cost in blood had been staggering.
Stephen gripped his head. He hadn’t slept in over forty-eight hours, and the migraine was blinding.
“May I ask which specialist you called in?”
If someone was coming to take over a terminal case, they had to be an absolute legend in the field.
They knew they couldn’t save the kid, but they were desperate to watch a master at work.
“You’ll see when she gets here.”
The entire trauma team waited with bated breath, only to stare in shock when a young man and woman strode through the double doors.
From Director Brooks down to the junior interns, everyone stared at the newcomers in sheer disbelief.
These two were the supposed specialists?
They might be from a rural hospital, but they weren’t idiots. These “specialists” looked barely out of college.
Director Brooks instinctively approached Dane. “Hello, I am—”
He started his introduction, only to be smoothly cut off by Dane.
“I’m not a doctor.”
Oh?
Director Brooks froze.
If the tall, imposing man wasn’t the doctor, that meant the girl…
“Dr. Brooks, I’m Claire. I’ll be taking over the surgery.”
Director Brooks felt his jaw go slack.
Was this a joke? Was she fresh out of med school?
She was incredibly young.
Could a girl this young really pull a patient back from the brink of death when a seasoned veteran like him had failed?
He couldn’t wrap his head around it.
Stephen forced himself to his feet. “Dr. Brooks, this is my cousin, Claire. She’s the one I called.”
“Don’t let her age fool you. She’s a prodigy.”
Stephen wasn’t trying to stroke Claire’s ego; he just needed Dr. Brooks to grant her immediate access to the OR.
“This…” Director Brooks had essentially already signed Lucas’s death certificate, but letting a rookie use a dying cop for practice crossed
a major ethical line.
If this went sideways, the family and the police department could hold him personally liable.
“Dr. Brooks, since you’ve already given up on the resuscitation, why not let me try?”
“I trained under Mary.”
Claire hadn’t originally intended to
drop her mentor’s name, but seeing his reluctance, she knew arguing would only waste time.
Invoking Mary’s name was the fastest way to cut the red tape.
Director Brooks absolutely knew who Mary was.
She was the undisputed First Scalpel of Apex, a legend who used to be flown
across the country to handle impossible cases.
He had been lucky enough to observe one of her surgeries years ago. The woman was a god in the OR.
“You’re Mary’s student?! Get scrubbed immediately! I’ll assist!”
Director Brooks’s demeanor completely flipped.
The rest of the staff had no idea who Mary was, but seeing their stoic director look like he’d just met
royalty they knew she had to be
titan in the field.
They all clamored to assist, desperate for the chance to observe.
But Claire shut down the crowd immediately.
They could watch the feed from the observation deck, but she wasn’t having an audience in her sterile field.
The local team looked entirely too disorganized, and Claire had zero faith in their discipline.
If someone panicked or broke protocol mid-surgery, it could cost Lucas his life.
