Chapter 1600

Director Brooks agreed that crowding the OR was a terrible idea. He selected only his most seasoned nurses and assistants to ensure nothing went wrong.
Claire rapidly changed into a sterile gown, double-gloved, scrubbed in, and stepped up to the table.
“Dr. James, as you can see, the trajectory is horrific. I couldn’t guarantee I’d be able to stop the hemorrhaging once the bullet was removed.”
He possessed the technical skill to extract the lead, but surviving the extraction didn’t mean surviving the blood loss.
That was why he had refused to make the cut.
Claire nodded, her fingers pressing firmly into a series of acupressure points near Lucas’s heart.
Under her rapid manipulation, Director Brooks watched in shock as the bleeding noticeably slowed.
The arterial spray was significantly less aggressive than just moments before.
They had applied standard tourniquets and pressure, but with the bullet still lodged near the artery, they couldn’t achieve full hemostasis.
Before Director Brooks could say a word, Claire slipped a small herbal pill into Lucas’s mouth.
“Wait!” Director Brooks lunged to fish it out, but Claire’s hands were too fast. She batted his hand away. “Relax. It’s a localized stimulant to stabilize his vitals.”
“It won’t interfere with the anesthesia or the operation.”
“Think of it like using ginseng slices to keep the heart pumping,” Claire clarified. Director Brooks stared at her.
He was slightly stunned. Did people still use herbal slices before surgery these days?
Was Dr. James a practitioner of traditional medicine or a Western surgeon?
Her acupressure technique had been flawlessly executed.
But he specifically remembered her mentor, Mary, being a purely Western trauma surgeon.
Ignoring his shock, Claire seamlessly requested a scalpel and went to work.
Thankfully, Director Brooks was a consummate professional. As an assistant, he was flawless, anticipating her needs and reacting instantly.
But Claire’s surgical speed was terrifying. She was moving twice as fast as he could.
She extracted the bullet and tied off the artery long before the blood loss reached critical levels.
As long as they kept him stable in the ICU and prevented postoperative infection, he was going to live.
“Unbelievable. You practically dragged him out of the grave!”
Director Brooks was in total awe. It really was a new era; dinosaurs like him were obsolete.
He genuinely couldn’t hold a candle
Claire. He couldn’t match her
speed, and he certainly couldn’t match her precisión.
“Thank you.” Claire offered a faint smile, leaning back slightly so a nurse could dab the sweat from her forehead.
“The extraction was flawless. Shall we step out and give Captain James the good news?”

His own daughter worked in Stephen’s division as a forensic examiner.
He hadn’t been thrilled when she chose the career path, but she was brilliant at it— much smarter than her old man.
He briefly wondered if he could play matchmaker for Stephen and his daughter.
If they got married, their kids would be unstoppable, regardless of which side of the family they took after!
“Dr. Brooks?” Claire had to raise her voice when she realized the man had entirely zoned out.
Director Brooks snapped back to reality. “Sorry, what was that?”
“I said, the surgery isn’t over.”
Claire pointed a gloved finger at Lucas’s crushed leg.
“If we don’t operate on this leg immediately, he’ll never walk normally again.”
The crush trauma was catastrophic, but because the surgical team had been so hyper-focused on the fatal chest wound, the leg had become a secondary priority. fo FindNovel.net
“Right, right, the leg. Should I call down the head of orthopedics?”
He could perform the surgery himself, but this required highly specialized hardware
repair.
Director Brooks knew his own limitations.
