Chapter 1631
[ 700 words ]
“Caleb, I already have plans for the weekend. Did you need something?”
Caleb didn’t know the exact reason for Claire’s refusal.
But since she said she had plans, he didn’t want to push it.
Besides, Hanson had rushed things so clumsily that trying to fix it now probably wouldn’t help anyway.
He decided to be direct. “It’s nothing major. You had a close call recently, so we just wanted to take you out for dinner and help you decompress.”
He carefully avoided mentioning Hanson’s blunder, not wanting Claire to overthink it.
“That will have to wait until next week. I’m completely swamped this weekend with a medical conference.”
“And I’ll likely be attending a few more lectures after that.”
“I’ve fallen behind on my university coursework, and I still need to schedule a new round of follow-ups for my previous patients.”
God, she hadn’t realized just how much she had on her plate until she listed it all out.
Caleb hadn’t expected her to be attending medical conferences already.
Since she had legitimate business to attend to, he readily agreed to postpone until the following week.
“Claire, I heard Hanson gifted you some Gaming Company Equity?” Caleb hesitated for a moment before finally broaching the subject.
After all, Hanson had specifically asked him to smooth things over. If he didn’t mention it now and dragged it out until next week, it wouldn’t feel right.
“He did. I tried to turn it down, but he insisted.”
“Seriously, what was he thinking? It was entirely unnecessary.”
“Hillary’s family already compensated me generously for saving her.”
Caleb quickly defended his friend. “He didn’t mean anything by it, so please don’t take it the wrong way. That’s just how the guy is wired to handle things.”
“His family situation is a bit complicated…”
Caleb spent a good amount of time vouching for Hanson.
Claire was smart; she instantly picked up on the underlying message in Caleb’s words.
“I didn’t take it the wrong way. I’d have to be crazy not to be thrilled about free equity.”
“Did Hanson ask you to smooth
things over for him?” From the very beginning, Claire understood that people from wealthy backgrounds like Hanson operated under different social rules than everyday people
They might seem approachable, but at their level of society, how could they truly act like ordinary folks?
Claire had scored a tangible, highly lucrative asset-she had zero reasons to be upset.
It wasn’t like she was ever going to cash in a favor from him anyway if she ever truly found herself in a bind her connections with The Churchill Family and The Green Family were more than sufficient.
Not to mention, The Hawk Family treated her remarkably well, too.
As a genius physician, the one thing she never lacked was powerful connections.
So, whatever Hanson’s motives were, she genuinely didn’t care.
“I knew you’d be understanding.” Caleb caught her drift immediately—she simply didn’t care about Hanson’s network.
It was entirely dispensable to her. So whether Hanson gave her a material reward or owed her a favor, it was all the same.
She was completely unbothered.
Was this the unshakeable confidence of a medical prodigy?
Still, he understood why she viewed it that way.
Her surgical skills were genuinely unparalleled. In the future, she would undoubtedly save the lives of countless wealthy and powerful figures.
People would be begging on her doorstep, fighting for the chance to do her favors. She would never be the one asking for help!
“Hanson really was overthinking it!” Claire’s words carried a double meaning.
Later, Caleb relayed her exact sentiments back to Hanson.
“The girl is straightforward and remarkably gracious,” Caleb noted, offering his assessment of Claire.
Hanson let out a bitter laugh. “Which makes my clumsy handling of the situation look even worse.”
“Let it go and stop stressing over it. Just focus on taking care of Hillary for now. When she’s fully recovered, the two of you can take Claire out for a nice dinner.”
“And regarding her cousin’s
company sure, we saw its potential and our investment was mutually beneficial, but at the end of the day,” they were probably backed into a corner when they accepted it.”
“Just make sure you look out for them moving forward.”
Caleb offered one final piece of advice: “My dad thinks the world of Claire. Ever since he started taking the remedies she prescribed, his energy levels have been through the roof.”
