Chapter 1634
[ 629 words ]
“No way, it’s nothing like that,” Claire quickly reassured Priscilla.
“Our school is very reasonable. I just happened to pull an all-nighter yesterday, so I need to go back and crash.”
Claire rubbed her eyes as she spoke.
God, she was exhausted.
“Alright, you go catch up on your sleep. I’m heading to the library.”
The university’s schedule for freshmen on Fridays was surprisingly merciful.
After the first afternoon class, they were officially done for the week.
It gave everyone plenty of time to handle their own weekend plans.
You could even take a short trip out of town with the full two-and-a-half days off.
But Priscilla was incredibly studious. Unless someone specifically invited her out, she practically lived in the library.
Even if her other three roommates wanted to isolate her, they never got the chance.
She simply never hung out with them anyway.
“Sounds good.” Claire easily navigated her way out of the campus.
Once off school grounds, she headed straight home and face-planted into bed.
For dinner that Friday evening, she ordered in.
However, Claire’s version of “ordering in” wasn’t like everyone else’s.
Her meals were delivered straight from the private kitchens of The Churchill Estate.
Perhaps because the chef’s culinary skills were lightyears beyond standard takeout, Claire felt incredibly satisfied after eating.
Riding a wave of good energy, she took a leisurely stroll around her neighborhood. She managed to cheer up a crying toddler who was throwing a tantrum over vegetables, and then helped an elderly neighbor struggling with their groceries.
She felt a warm glow of civic pride.
Having eaten beautifully and slept soundly, Claire woke up bright and early on Saturday morning.
She had lent her usual car to Lawler and his team.
So this morning, she grabbed the keys to one of her other vehicles to head to the conference.
It was a striking, highly customized Porsche Panamera.
As she drove, Claire quickly realized that driving a high-end car really did change things other driver on the road seemed significantly more polite toward her.
When she pulled into the parking lot, her car slotted in perfectly among the understated luxury vehicles of the medical elite.
It just looked a bit younger and flashier by comparison.
Stepping into the crowd of senior medical heavyweights, Claire’s youth stood out starkly.
People kept shooting curious glances her way.
They were likely trying to figure out how someone so young had gotten in.
Claire didn’t feel awkward in the slightest, smoothly blending in until Barry and his colleagues called out to her.
“Claire, I didn’t expect you to arrive
Team Barry knew she v
v still a student, so bas
time was usually tight Conter
While he considered her arrival early, his peers certainly didn’t.
Look at the time! How could Barry think this was early?
Barry was famously strict with his own child, but surprisingly lenient and sweet with other people’s kids.
Especially when it came to Claire.
Why would he be strict with her? Geniuses required a free-range approach!
“Barry, when did you take on another student? Why didn’t you tell me?”
“And a female student, no less. That’s a rare sight for you.”
Within their professional circles, many senior male doctors preferred not to take on female students.
In the digital age, students were much bolder than they used to be.
They wouldn’t hesitate to threaten or expose their mentors online, leaving professors walking on eggshells.
The dynamic between a female student and a male mentor was even more precarious.
If anything went wrong with a female student’s progress, the blame was almost instantly shifted onto the male instructor.
“I seem to recall you explicitly saying you refused to take on female students,” another doctor chimed in.
Although they didn’t work in the
same hospital, these conferences et
bred familiarity, and knew a bit about everyone elser
Barry had always been somewhat of a lone wolf, and his previous stance on female students was well known.
So why had he taken one on now?
The doctor looked at Barry with sharp, analyzing eyes.
