Chapter 1651
[ 681 words ]
“Latham!”
Mary glared sternly at her eldest son.
“There’s absolutely no reason a woman in her seventies should still be paying her son’s living expenses!”
“You’re allowed to fail, but you are not allowed to wallow in self-pity!”
“You used to be the CEO of a multi-billion-dollar company, and now you can’t earn a single dime?”
“At the very least, you could drag this out for a few years until you hit retirement age and collect a pension!”
Mary thought back to when she had insisted her two sons pay into their social security, realizing how incredibly wise she had been.
If she hadn’t forced them, these two idiots would probably be out on the streets starving by now.
If The James Group hadn’t been sabotaged by that woman, it wouldn’t have gone completely bankrupt.
But this son of hers couldn’t even manage to pick himself up after a fall; he just kept burying his head in the sand, leaving her completely at a loss.
With her assets, she could easily ensure her children and grandchildren never went hungry, but that was the extent of it.
Her eldest son still had his head in the clouds. If she enabled his current mindset, he would burn through however much money she threw at him.
After all, he had completely thrown his pride out the window at this point.
Did he really think mooching off his mother would be that easy?
“Mom, it’s exactly because I used to run a multi-billion-dollar company that no one will hire me now.”
“Every competitor in the business world is laughing at me, and absolutely no one wants to see me make a comeback.”
“Honestly, I should be thanking my lucky stars that they aren’t actively sabotaging me behind the scenes.”
“Then go work construction!” Mary rolled her eyes at him.
He made it sound like he was some irreplaceable VIP.
If he hadn’t been so ruthless and underhanded in his past business dealings,
nobody would have the free time to actively target him now.
Mary wanted to tell him that he was the one who had acted like a monster first, but she swallowed the words.
Forget it, there was no point reasoning with him.
“Mom, look at my age. Even if I wanted to do manual labor, no site would take me.”
Latham offered a bitter smile.
Mary sized him up. “If you aren’t afraid of hard work, I can definitely find you a job.”
“Whether it’s working as a security
guard, a janitor at a university, omet
serving food in a hospital cafeteria,
theres always something, dol
can
Latham was speechless. She really was his dearest mother.
Mary raised an eyebrow. Was she wrong?
“There’s no one to take care of Lance,” Latham offered, reverting to his favorite
excuse.
“I’ll hire a caretaker for him.” Mary had never been stingy with her money.
She just couldn’t stand the sight of her eldest son drinking his days away in a drunken stupor at home.
He even thought running to the grocery store was beneath him.
He clearly hadn’t come to terms with his new reality.
Did he honestly think he was so famous that everyone in the grocery store would recognize him?
It was completely absurd!
“Do you know how much a caretaker costs a month? It makes more sense for me to stay home and look after him!”
“Do you really think the salary from those jobs you mentioned would even cover a caretaker?” Latham raised his voice.
He knew he had no ground to stand on, so he was trying to make up for it with sheer volume.
“That’s why I said I’ll pay for the caretaker. The money you earn just needs to cover your and Lance’s daily expenses.”
“If you can even manage that, then
go find a live-in job that provi”, then
room and board, and’ll cover all Lance’s expenses.”
Mary’s tone left no room for argument.
Latham finally understood that she wasn’t bluffing this time.
Even Lance, who was doing physical therapy in the next room, had overheard the
argument between his grandmother and his father.
He leaned against the wall and slowly walked out of his room.
“Dad, you should go to work. I can take care of myself. We don’t need to hire a caretaker, and it really need to go out, I can use my power wheelchair.”
