Chapter 1671
[ 564 words ]
“We’re Claire’s bodyguards. Don’t misunderstand.”
Rory James remembered Claire telling her not to call her the Clan Successor in front of outsiders, saying it made her sound like some backwoods tycoon.
So, Rory kept her explanation simple.
“You’re bodyguards?” Ulysses Grant was stunned.
But thinking it over, it actually made sense.
Only bodyguards would follow Claire all the way back to her apartment.
“Yes, Agent Grant, please don’t get the wrong idea. They’re my personal security detail, protecting me from the shadows.”
“They originally noticed someone tailing me, which is why…”
With Claire’s explanation, Ulysses finally understood.
So both sides had assumed the other was the enemy?
Hearing Claire confirm their identities, Ulysses breathed a sigh of relief.
He quickly made a call, telling his backup to stand down.
What a mess. It was all a massive misunderstanding.
“Do your two guards live here with you?”
Then where were the two FIB agents he requested going to stay?
“No,” Claire explained. “They live next door.”
The apartment next door was practically becoming a barracks.
Three female bodyguards and one male bodyguard.
“Why don’t they stay with you? It might be a little cramped, but close-quarters protection is much safer.”
“If they’re next door, they won’t be able to react in time if something happens.”
Ulysses wasn’t trying to be critical; he genuinely cared about Claire’s safety.
Claire also remembered that the FIB headquarters was planning to assign their own agents to protect her.
So she said, “Once your people arrive, Rory and Jace will move in with me.”
“Your two agents can take the place next door. Does that work?”
“Renting another unit is a waste of money. Just have them sleep in the living room.”
Ulysses wasn’t trying to be harsh on his colleagues.
He assumed the adjacent apartment was rented, which seemed like an
unnecessary expense.
How was Claire supposed to explain this?
“Money isn’t an issue. Safety is the priority.”
Ulysses was speechless. What a flex!
He felt personally victimized by her wealth!
Why couldn’t the world spare just a little of that fortune for him?
“Understood,” Ulysses said, dropping the subject completely.
Downstairs, The Prowler flicked away his cigarette and made a call.
“Boss, this target is tricky.”
“She’s got a heavy security presence. Grabbing the flash drive quietly is going to be almost impossible.”
“Plus, we still can’t confirm she actually has it.”
A mechanized male voice crackled over the line. “If you aren’t sure, keep tailing her until you are.”
“If we can’t get the drive back, then end her.”
“If she hadn’t played hero, the target would be dead already.” And the drive would be back in their hands.
Claire wasn’t the only one who had
intervened, but she was a doctors and a young woman, making her an easy mark.
More importantly, she was the last person to have contact with a conscious Honeysuckle.
“Understood,” The Prowler replied with robotic precision.
He was the one who had arranged for The Assassin and the getaway driver to tie up loose ends at the hospital.
His boss always trusted him to get the job done right.
The operation his boss was running bordered on high treason, meaning exposure was not an option.
Someone had stolen their intel, and
if those files reached the FIB headquarters, his boss wouldn’t be
the only one
wown. A whole
string of powerful figures would be ruined.
His boss had to crush this threat before it escalated.
Jace James stood by the balcony in
Claire’s study. The curtains weren et
draw
hiding the interior from the street below.
However, a tiny sliver remained open, giving him a clear view outside.
“We’ve got a new face lurking around the complex.”
