Chapter 1672
[ 598 words ]
While The Prowler was scoping out the apartment from below, Rory and Jace were already on high alert upstairs.
After checking in with the rest of the security team next door, they confirmed the man downstairs was a new arrival.
He had shown up right before Claire got home.
It was obvious he had beaten them to the complex and already uncovered Claire’s identity.
Claire hadn’t been hiding her identity, so it was only a matter of time before someone tracked her down.
The only question was whether he was after the flash drive or just out for revenge. “Whether it’s for the drive or payback, we aren’t going to let him get away with it.”
As the two guards plotted how to deal with the threat, Claire, who was seeing Ulysses out, overheard that she was already being staked out and shook her head in disbelief.
Wasn’t this retaliation coming a little too fast?
Then again, anyone brazen enough to orchestrate a hit in a crowded public space wouldn’t hesitate to target her immediately.
“I’ll have my team keep an eye on him.”
Even Ulysses hadn’t expected the enemy to strike so soon.
He quickly ordered his agents to pull the complex’s security footage, but they found no record of the man entering, which made sense.
If he couldn’t even cover his tracks, he wouldn’t be in such a deadly line of work.
Ulysses called off the backup team heading to Claire’s apartment, instructing them to surveil the suspect instead.
The agents specifically assigned to protect Claire would report directly to her tonight.
Claire skipped classes today, opting to catch up on some much-needed sleep at home.
The man downstairs didn’t leave. Instead, he swapped his clothes for a complex security uniform.
For him to secure a fake cover so quickly proved he was a seasoned professional. The Fake Guard had no idea he was already under surveillance. His plan was to watch Claire and find a way to break into her apartment once she left.
As a security guard, getting into a resident’s home shouldn’t have been too difficult.
However, he quickly found himself completely stumped by the state-of-the-art smart lock on Claire’s door.
“This Claire is just some ordinary college girl. Why the hell is her lock so advanced?”
He consulted a few of his underground contacts, but all of them admitted they couldn’t bypass it.
The consensus was that he would need a world-class hacker to crack the encryption.
One of his associates offered a terrible suggestion. “Why not just blow the lock?”
“Or just take the door off its hinges. That’s easier.”
“What about the windows? Can you get in that way?”
“They’re reinforced security windows. Not an option.”
“Who does this girl think she is? Her security system is better than a bank’s.”
Claire?
She had no idea herself. The Churchill Family had handled all the renovations. Left with no other options, The Fake Guard had to wait for Claire to get out of class. So, when Claire returned to her apartment that afternoon, he made his move.
He had already gathered intel from the actual security staff, confirming that Claire lived alone and had recently moved in for college,

Being a rich heiress explained a lot.
He rang the doorbell, completely unaware that Claire was watching him from the peephole.

Whether he was an assassin or a thief, he was perfectly built to be invisible.
“Coming!” Claire called out, right as he began to suspect she was onto him.
“Who is it?”
She deliberately made loud footsteps, pretending she had just walked over to the door.
