Chapter 1673

[ 610 words ]

“Complex security. Ma’am, your downstairs neighbor reported a leak coming from your bathroom. I need to come in and take a look.”

What a terrible excuse!

Claire scoffed inwardly.

“Give me a second.”

Claire didn’t open the door. Rory did.

“Excuse me…” The Fake Guard’s expression shifted the moment he saw it wasn’t Claire.

He knew what Claire sounded like. The person who just spoke was definitely her, so why was there a different woman standing here?

Claire poked her head out from the kitchen, casually munching on a cucumber. “Let him in to check it out,” she mumbled.

So there were two women inside?

He hadn’t noticed if this other girl lived with Claire, but he had definitely seen her enter the building before.

The Fake Guard adjusted his cap and thoughtfully slipped on a pair of shoe covers.

Rory guarded the front door while another figure emerged from the study.

It was Jace!

To make matters worse, Claire had retreated to the living room, putting a considerable distance between them.

“Jace, go with the security guard and check if there’s a leak anywhere.”

Security guard?

He was cursing violently in his head.

Why was there a man in this apartment too?

Grabbing Claire and interrogating her alone would have been easy, but dealing with two extra people complicated things immensely.

Even if he possessed the combat skills to subdue all three of them, what good would it do?

If there was too much noise and the cops showed up, his entire mission would be ruined!

As The Fake Guard hesitated, Jace realized his sudden appearance had stalled the man’s attack.

Clutching his stomach, Jace groaned. “Oh, man. I need to hit the bathroom. Whatever we ordered last night is destroying me!”

He sprinted into the bathroom and slammed the door shut.

The Fake Guard was completely thrown by this bizarre turn of events.

Did this mean he could finally make his move?

He pretended to inspect the kitchen, glancing over his shoulder. “Whoever owns the unit, please come here for a second.”

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a flashlight.

Claire didn’t budge. “You can just check it yourself. I wouldn’t know what I’m looking at anyway.”

He made a show of looking around,

but the second he stepped out of the

kitchen, he lunged at Claire. Before

he could teach her, Rory intercepted him.

“What do you think you’re doing?” Rory yelled, though her tone was almost playful.

Even as she spoke, she had effortlessly blocked his strike.

The Fake Guard couldn’t even draw his weapon before the two were locked in hand-to-hand combat.

Trading blows with him, Rory quickly realized he was highly trained.

However, his skills were geared toward stealth and assassination.

In a straight fight, he was struggling just to keep up with her.

Worse yet, Jace burst out of the bathroom the second he heard the commotion.

In a two-on-one scenario, The Fake Guard didn’t stand a chance.

Pinned to the floor, the realization finally hit him. “You were waiting for me to walk right into a trap?”

It was the only explanation for their bizarre behavior.

Rory and Jace exchanged a knowing smirk.

Rory patted him mockingly on the shoulder.

“You weredurking around downstairs for hours. Did it really never cross your mind that your target had security detail?”

The Fake Guard had actually rushed the job precisely because he feared backup was on the way.

But he had played right into their hands.

Unwilling to accept defeat, he tried to bargain. “I can pay you. Just let me go.”

“I just saw this girl lived alone and figured I could score some cash. I didn’t even take anything. I’ll compensate you.”

This wasn’t just a bribe; it was a veiled threat. He was reminding

them that even if they handed net

over to the cops, he had a solid cover story.

“Then what’s this?” Rory reached for his waistband.
