Chapter 1708
[ 622 words ]
A hundred million was a staggering amount of money.
Claire looked at Tandy and gave him a playful wink.
“What kind of illness does this kid have that a hundred million isn’t enough to tempt a doctor?”
While Claire wasn’t entirely sure her skills were worth a hundred million, it was definitely an enticing challenge.
And if she couldn’t pull it off, Tandy was right there.
Tandy wasn’t desperate for cash, but no one in their right mind would turn down that kind of payout.
“Are we talking millions of dollars?” Tandy asked, his voice deadpan.
“I think so?” Arthur wasn’t entirely sure.
No matter how big the payout was, he wasn’t going to see a dime of it.
However, Mr. Charles had publicly promised a massive finder’s fee for anyone who introduced a successful doctor.
“Dr. Tandy, your reputation precedes you. You should give it a shot. The young master suffered a severe spinal injury and is completely paralyzed.”
“Surgery could fix that, right?” Tandy had performed similar spinal reconstructive surgeries before. They were incredibly high-risk, but a full recovery was possible.
It certainly didn’t warrant a global, hundred-million-dollar bounty.
“Ugh, you know how these massive crime families operate. Especially out here in The Zen Marches.”
“Mr. Charles’s family is constantly tearing each other apart for power.”
“This grandson was born to his favorite, youngest son, so he was always the golden child.”
“They brought in a world-renowned surgeon from Cascadia for the initial operation.” “But something went catastrophically wrong. The surgery failed, either from post-op infection or sabotage during recovery.”
“Rumor has it Mr. Charles executed a dozen people over it.”
The Cascadian doctor managed to escape with his life, but he didn’t walk away unscathed.
Mr. Charles’s brutal retaliation sent shockwaves through the medical community, terrifying specialists to the point where no one dared to take the case.
Furthermore, the success rate for a secondary spinal surgery was infinitely lower than the first attempt.
So no surgeon wanted to guarantee a cure for a broken boy.
All the money in the world couldn’t buy a miracle if no doctor was willing to pick up the scalpel.
“So, it’s not that he’s incurable, but that no one is brave enough to take the case?” Tandy chuckled and patted Arthur’s shoulder.
“Kid, you know this man is a violent
surgery fails, yet you’re still pitt
psychopath who might kill us if
thi
job to us?”
Arthur flinched, realizing he had just made a terrible pitch.
“That’s not what I meant! I was just thinking out loud. Please don’t take it the wrong way.”
“You’re Dewitt’s VIPs. I would never intentionally put you in the line of fire.”
Arthur hadn’t harbored any malicious intent; he just saw two brilliant doctors and connected the dots.
If they succeeded, he would pocket a massive finder’s fee.
If they refused, it was no skin off his back.
As for what would happen if they failed…
He slapped his own cheek hard. “I’m an idiot. I wasn’t thinking straight. Please forgive me, Dr. Tandy, Miss.”
He had been about to point out that
they shared the same last name as Mr. Charles to build rapport, but
quickly swallowed his words.
Mr. Charles was notorious for his explosive rage. It was the main reason his
grandson’s treatment had been stalled for so long.
“If this Mr. Charles is a heavily armed warlord occupying the border, why does the General tolerate him?”
Claire found the political dynamic fascinating.
“Honestly? The General can’t do anything about him. Mr. Charles is an international arms dealer. His private army is armed to the teeth. If they went to war, the General might win but it would be a pyrrhic victory.”
A pyrrhic victory was just a slow death, so the General kept his distance.
“Makes sense.”
Claire didn’t press for more details.
When Mr. Charles’s perimeter guards heard that Dewitt’s friends were requesting
passage, they didn’t put up much of a fight.
The convoy was cleared to proceed immediately.
