Chapter 1748
[ 554 words ]
“The family would only need to make sure she gets proper care and nutrition.”
Mary wasn’t one to hand out charity recklessly, but seeing such a tiny, fragile child tugged at her heartstrings.
“You’ll have to discuss that with her family,” Claire said, surprised Mary already had a solution.
She had assumed Mary wanted her to cure the girl as a way to hone her skills.
Her traditional methods could theoretically treat the condition, but the process would be incredibly slow.
With the girl’s current state, it all depended on what her family wanted.
But if they kept putting off the surgery, she might deteriorate to the point where she was no longer operable.
“Can you really find someone to treat little Nellie for free?”
The old man with the pipe eyed Mary skeptically.
He was trying to figure out if she was full of it.
Mary nodded, pulling out a pen and paper to jot down a phone number.
“I see her family is swamped right now. Could you pass this along to them?”
“They just need to call this number and ask.”
The old man took the paper suspiciously. “Is this for real? They don’t need to drop your name?”
Mary chuckled. “No need. My name won’t get them a discount, but they can say Dr. Hastings referred them.”
Dr. Hastings. So the old lady’s last name was Hastings.
“What a coincidence. My last name is Hastings too. Maybe we were family five hundred years ago.”
Mary shot him a look. “What a coincidence indeed.”
She didn’t elaborate. The three of them paid the bill and left.
Once they were gone and Logan finally caught a breather, Quincy rushed over to share the massive news.
“Make sure you don’t lose this number. The doctor said to call and tell them Dr. Hastings sent you.”
“She seemed really kind, so she’s probably a real doctor. She has no reason to scam you.”
“You should give it a shot, Logan.”
“Nellie has been having more frequent episodes lately. Dragging this out isn’t a solution.”
Logan “Quincy,

“I asked. The two young girls are students at Cabinda University, so it’s probably legit. You were busy cooking, and I didn’t want too interrupt.”
“To prove they weren’t scammers, the girl even showed me her university badge.”
“This is ninety percent real.”
“Logan, whether you ever see her again or not, call that number right now.”
“I’ll have my son look up the lab to make sure it’s completely above board.”
“If something is shady, we won’t go. But if it’s real, you need to sign up immediately.”
“What if they fill up all the spots and reject Nellie?”
Hearing that, Logan’s anxiety spiked. “I’ll call them right now!”
He scrubbed his hands raw, wiped them repeatedly on his apron, and finally picked up his phone.
Every ring made his heart hammer against his ribs.
“Hello… Hi, my name is…”
Stammering nervously, Logan explained his granddaughter’s condition and mentioned Dr. Hastings had sent him.
The person on the other end seemed unsure, checked with someone else, and eventually told him to bring the child in.
Coincidentally, the research lab was right there in Cabinda, making it perfectly convenient for Logan and Nellie.
Meanwhile, Claire dropped Priscilla off at campus before taking Mary to the military hospital.
