Chapter 1747
[ 578 words ]
Congenital heart disease. From the moment she was born, the family refused to give up on her.
Logan practically worked his arms to the bone tossing his wok, just to scrape together every extra cent.
The reason he didn’t open for dinner was because he needed to sleep. If he exhausted himself and ended up in the hospital, both he and the kid would suffer.
“Logan’s daughter-in-law is truly heartless. She just abandoned her own flesh and blood without a second thought.”
“Her husband died in the line of duty, she ran off, and left a sick little girl behind. Logan and his wife have had it incredibly rough.”
“Thank god his niece is a good person and helps take care of the kid.”
The two old men kept chatting casually.
Claire continued eating, but she was listening intently.
Hearing their conversation, her eyes instinctively drifted toward the little girl near the
door.
She was extremely skinny, looking quiet and well-behaved.
She was currently helping sort vegetables.
“I’ll be right back, Claire.”
Mary had eaten enough. She stood up and walked over to the little girl.
She crouched down, whispered a few words to her, and then waved Claire over.
“Come here and check her pulse, Claire.”
Hearing that, Claire walked over.
When the two old men saw Claire reaching for the girl’s wrist, they immediately intervened. “Hey, what are you doing?”
“This is Logan’s granddaughter. He’s too busy to watch her, but she’s a good kid.” “Don’t you go bullying her!”
Claire had already finished checking the pulse. “We aren’t doing anything, sir. We’re medical students, and this is our professor.”
“The kid doesn’t look too healthy, so my professor wanted me to examine her as a quick practical lesson.” Claire spun the lie flawlessly.
Hearing that, the two old men scrutinized the three of them closely.
“Are you actually doctors, or are you human traffickers?”
The old man with the pipe had heard way too many horror stories.
He had a grandson of his own. Whenever strangers approache immediately suspected they were
traffickers scoping the area
These days, you could lose everything, but you absolutely could not lose a child.
How would you ever face their parents?
“Do we look like human traffickers?” Claire asked wryly.
The old man frowned. “You can’t
judge a book by its cover. I heardhet
traffickers are good looking now because it makes it easier to trick people.”
The student was gorgeous, and the professor, despite her age, was an elegant older
woman.
She looked like the type who could walk into a park and instantly have a dozen suitors throwing gold bracelets at her.
How could he explain it?
He genuinely hoped they weren’t bad people.
But since they claimed to be from the medical school, could they cure Nellie?
“What’s the verdict, Claire?” Mary didn’t bother arguing with the old men. She only looked at her granddaughter.
Back in her prime, Mary had worked in the ER, so her medical knowledge was vast and highly adaptable.
However, she wasn’t an absolute expert in congenital heart disease.
She wondered if Claire could use her holistic techniques to help the girl.
“She definitely has congenital
disease, and it’s a highly complexe
case Even with surgery, the efhet
Outcome wouldn’t be guaranteed…”
The biggest hurdle was that a normal family could never afford the surgical costs.
That was exactly why Logan had been endlessly delaying the procedure.
Claire wasn’t necessarily needed here—the top surgeons at the military hospital could handle this.
Mary pondered for a moment. “I actually know a top cardiothoracic surgeon who is currently running a clinical trial.”
“If the family is willing to let her participate in the study, all her medical expenses would be completely covered.”
