Chapter 1752

Otherwise, why would she have always treated Evie so wonderfully?
If Quentin had set his sights on another girl after Evie had traveled all this way just to care for him, how was Yvette supposed to face the Grant family?
Their daughter couldn’t just be cast aside like trash.
Even if her son had technically done nothing wrong, the rumors alone would brand him a heartbreaker.
“Taking care of me? Wasn’t that something the two of you decided on your own?”
“I already hired a professional nurse. Her being here has done nothing but get in the way.”
“Mom, you can’t honestly tell me you didn’t know she hasn’t the faintest idea how to look after someone?”
Quentin refused to give Evie any grace.
Yvette’s face stiffened. She hadn’t expected her son’s resentment toward Evie to run this deep.
While she knew Evie wasn’t exactly domestic, she assumed her presence would at least provide some emotional support.
Had she really been nothing but a nuisance to the staff?
She really shouldn’t have let Evie come. It wasn’t even about the lack of help-the main issue was that making this trip effectively tied her reputation to Quentin’s.
If her son was dead set against marrying Evie, what a mess this would be.
Yvette felt a pang of regret. Her own mindset had always been straightforward.
After all, her husband had willingly married into her family, and they had shared a deeply loving marriage.
Because of that, Yvette had never been particularly calculating when it came to romantic matters.
“Quentin Young, don’t you cross the line!”
Before Yvette could mediate, Evie lost her temper.
“I gave up my study time to be here! I even dropped out of my professor’s lab
project just to take care of you!”
“And now you’re accusing me of getting in the way?”
“How exactly am I in the way?”
“If I wasn’t here watching them, how would you know the nurses weren’t slacking off or cutting corners?”
“And what about your meals? I went
out of
y way to buy you food every single day! Was that. Was that got infinitely better than the hospital cafeteria?”
Quentin let out a cold scoff. “Right. Like the first day, when you bought me a massive box of spicy wings.”
Evie choked on her own saliva. “Cough— I didn’t do it on purpose! I just forgot for a second!”
She hadn’t ordered anything spicy for him after that, had she?
True, she hadn’t ordered spicy food again but she had also left him Estarving while shely forget to bring back any meals at all.
When he finally asked the nurse to fetch him something from the Evie had returned
cafete
and
thrown a massive tantrum about it
He didn’t even have the energy to list all her blunders.
Like the time she insisted on fetching hot water for a compress to wipe his face, and
nearly gave him third-degree burns.
Fortunately, she had burned her own hands wringing out the towel first.
Yvette listened with a helpless expression.
To an outsider, this might have sounded like a lovers’ quarrel.
But Yvette knew her son. He despised incompetence.
Evie’s endless string of foolish mistakes had infuriated him; there was no way he harbored any feelings for her.
“Evie, why don’t you head out and explore the city? I’m here at the hospital now, so you don’t need to stay cooped up.”
“Cabinda has so many wonderful sights. Go clear your head, and I’ll cover all your expenses.”
“You’ve worked so hard looking after Quentin these past few days…”
With a mix of gentle coaxing and firm insistence, Yvette managed to usher Evie out. Evie worried that the moment she left, Quentin would start badmouthing her to his mother.
But on second thought, wouldn’t he do that even if she stayed?
Besides, Yvette adored her. Surely she wouldn’t listen to Quentin’s nonsense.
Once they were alone, Yvette turned to her son. “I’m sorry. I didn’t handle this well.”
“I should have been here the moment you got hurt, and I never should have agreed to let Evie come.”
“I just thought it would be a good chance for you two to bond. Clearly, I was being naive.”
