Chapter 1768
[ 609 words ]
After Claire led her grandmother away, Yvette turned to Evie with a heavy sigh. “Evie, you really should go enjoy the city on your own.”
“I think the reunion is going to go smoothly, and there really isn’t anything you can help with here.”
“The longer you stay in Cabinda, the more it’s going to hurt your studies.”
“Besides, you’ve been away for a while now. Your mother must be getting worried.”
Yvette was trying to be as gentle as possible, but Evie knew she was being dismissed.
She also knew pushing back too aggressively would backfire.
So, she pivoted to a softer manipulation tactic. “Are you absolutely sure you’ll be okay by yourself?”
“I know Queenie is older, but she clearly travels with intense security.”
“What if she decides to take Quentin away from you?”
“You saw her. She’s clearly extremely wealthy.”
You couldn’t hire a private security detail like that without serious money.
Those two bodyguards were standing outside the door like statues. Even whispering, Evie was terrified they might overhear her.
Her words hit directly at Yvette’s core fear.
Yvette shook her head firmly. “Stop talking nonsense, Evie.”
“Quentin is my son. Do you really think she’s going to kidnap him? He’s a grown man capable of making his own decisions.”
“And if going with her is what’s best for his leg, I will support it one hundred percent, no matter where she takes him.”
Yvette wasn’t just performing for the bodyguards; it was the absolute truth.
If Queenie had the resources to heal him, Yvette would gladly let her son go with her.
Evie realized Yvette was a lost cause.
*You might be thrilled to hand over your son, but what if she only wants the grandson and has zero interest in a widowed daughter-in-law?*
*Don’t forget, your husband is dead!*
*Do you honestly believe that once she takes Quentin, she’ll ever give him back to you?*
*Keep dreaming!*
“I know fixing his leg is the priority, just wanted to make sure
was looking out for you since you’re here all alone.”
here all alone.”
“Yvette, I know I can’t do much…” Evie finally yielded. “I can head back
to Moxilara first and wait with you have everything sorted out
“As for what you said earlier about canceling the engagement, you’re right. Let’s just drop it.”
“It seems Quentin and I just aren’t meant to be.”
She was pulling a classic guilt trip, retreating to force Yvette’s hand.
Yvette had braced herself for a massive argument, so hearing Evie surrender so
easily actually made her feel a pang of guilt.
After all, this was a girl she had watched grow up. She patted Evie’s shoulder warmly. “Don’t worry, Evie.”
“Even if you and Quentin don’t work out, I’ll always treat you like my own daughter.”
Evie scoffed internally: *You can lie to yourself, but don’t expect me to buy that garbage.*
*You’ll say one thing to my face and scheme against me behind my back.*
*Treat me like a daughter? Let me guess, a ‘daughter’ who conveniently doesn’t inherit a single cent of the fortune?*
“I’m sorry, Yvette. I know I disappointed you.”
“He doesn’t like me, and I can’t force him to.”
“I spent all this time agonizing over his care, but I guess it couldn’t compete with a girl who visited him for five minutes.”
Even as she retreated, she couldn’t resist planting one last toxic seed in Yvette’s mind.
Whether it was Claire or that bitch of
a cousin, anyone who actually ended up with Quentin was going to have to deal with the nasty prejudices Eve was feaving behind! Coment
Of course, this was entirely Evie’s delusion.
Neither Claire nor Yolande had the slightest romantic interest in Quentin.
He might have been gorgeous and an incredible dancer.
But the sisters were accustomed to elite circles; they weren’t going to lose their
minds over a pretty face.
