Chapter 1767
[ 663 words ]
“Grandma!”
Perhaps it was the undeniable pull of blood, but Quentin didn’t need the endless reassurances his mother had required. The moment he saw Queenie, he felt a profound, instinctual bond.
He called out to her without a second thought.
Tears spilled down Queenie’s cheeks as her voice broke. “Oh, my boy!”
Only she knew the decades of heartbreak carried in that single cry.
She had spent half her life searching for her husband and son, only to be met with the crushing agony of their deaths.
Now, her only surviving grandson, a remarkably handsome young man, lay confined
a hospital bed with a shattered leg.
She had the wealth to whisk him out of the country for the absolute best rehabilitation care the world had to offer, but even that couldn’t suppress the overwhelming surge of grief.
She and her husband had shared an unbreakable love, but she had never been able to stop him from dedicating his life to the military.
He was fiercely patriotic; she valued survival. They had chosen entirely different paths.
He had died on the battlefield, while she had built a corporate empire.
Their son had inherited his father’s unwavering spirit. Though he hadn’t died in combat, he had sacrificed his life in a disaster relief effort during peacetime.
Looking at the last remaining piece of her family, Queenie wept openly.
Quentin desperately wanted to get up and hug her, but his body refused. He couldn’t even stand.
They said severe bone injuries took a hundred days to heal, and his fracture was particularly brutal. He wasn’t allowed anywhere near the floor yet.
“Please don’t cry.” Quentin, entirely unequipped to comfort the weeping woman he had just met, felt a lump in his throat.
Queenie let the tears fall silently, offering no further wails of despair.
Everyone in the room waited with quiet respect, allowing her the space to release decades of pent-up emotion.
It didn’t take long for her to compose herself. She wiped her eyes with a silk handkerchief. “I’m not crying out of sadness. I’m just so happy.”
“Tears of joy, you understand?”
Claire and Pandora quietly slipped out of the room, leaving the newly reunited family to bond in peace.
Evie, utterly devoid of any social awareness, actually tried to stay behind.
Yvette had no choice but to physically escort her out into the hall.
Too cowardly to direct her fury at Yvette, Evie settled for glaring viciously at Claire.
She was convinced Claire was a walking curse sent to destroy her life.
First, Claire had cost her a spot in the prestigious research group, and now she was actively sabotaging ber grip on the young family Wealth!
Evie’s glare was so aggressively blatant that Pandora couldn’t ignore it.
“You’re awfully young to be carrying around so much hostility.”
“Did my granddaughter do something to offend you? Why are you staring at her like
you want to kill her?”
Pandora’s blunt call-out caught Evie completely off guard.
It was far too direct. But since
a was an elderly woman,
snapping back would immediately paint Evie as the villain.
Besides, she needed to endure this humiliation and pivot to winning Queenie’s favor.
If the old billionaire approved of her, the origins of this random grandmother and
granddaughter wouldn’t matter at all.
“Not at all. We just had a minor misunderstanding, that’s all.”
Evie forced a sickeningly sweet smile.
Yvette’s brow smoothed slightly. “Evie, you and Claire are about the same age. It’s completely normal to bump heads.”
“But do me a favor, please don’t cause a scene in the hospital.”
Evie felt nauseous with rage: *You met this girl literally hours ago, and you’re
already taking her side over mine?*
A deep seed of resentment toward Yvette took root in her chest.
But the angrier she felt, the more submissive she forced herself to appear.
“Yvette, I promise I would never start a fight with her!”
“Don’t worry, I’ll treat her like she’s my own sister!”
The sheer falseness of Evie’s statement sent a visible shudder down Claire’s spine.
“Grandma, why don’t I take you for a walk? The hospital gardens are actually quite nice.”
Claire had absolutely zero interest in
entertaining Evie’s psychotic actine
or pretending to be polite in front of Yvette.
