Chapter 1800

When he brought her to the emergency room, he ran into Claire.
Claire was there to sit in on a lecture, since Mary was the guest speaker today.
Claire wanted to absorb as much practical knowledge as possible, so she dropped by whenever she had the chance.
Plus, she was actively managing Lucas Charles’s pre-op conditioning, so she spent a lot of her free time at the hospital anyway.
Claire hadn’t expected such a dramatic coincidence.
She instantly recognized Yanni, and recognized the bleeding woman being rushed past them as Bianca.
“What happened to you two?” Claire asked Yanni.
Seeing her, Yanni actually looked mildly embarrassed.
If Claire knew, it meant Dane would find out.
After all, he had been screwing around with Dane’s secretary’s girlfriend.
Even for him, it felt a little out of bounds.
When Yanni hesitated to answer, Claire mentally filled in the blanks. “Don’t tell me you tried to dump her, and she got so worked up she miscarried?”
Yanni winced. “… You’re a pretty good guesser, Claire.”
“Wait, how did you know she was having a miscarriage and didn’t just, like, jump off a building?”
While he was a little stressed by the situation, he still viewed it as a minor inconvenience.
He even had the audacity to crack a joke with Claire.
“I could tell she was pregnant the night I saw you two at the restaurant,” Claire said, shooting Yanni a flat, unimpressed look.
Did he seriously think he was some kind of anti-hero who had gallantly exposed a cheater?
In reality, he and Bianca were cut from the exact same cloth. Neither of them was a decent human being.
“Your eyes are that sharp?” Yanni looked genuinely shocked.
Claire sighed. “…I’m a doctor.”
“Oh?” Yanni honestly hadn’t expected that. Were all doctors this intense nowadays?
Claire looked incredibly young, probably still just a medical student, right?
“Then can you tell if the kid was mine or Lincoln’s?”
Yanni blurted out the question without thinking.
Claire stared at him like she was looking at a complete idiot. “I’m a doctor, not a god!”
Right-so she couldn’t tell.
Yanni actually looked a little disappointed.
Bianca ultimately lost the baby.
Yanni had aggressively paid the hospital bills upfront on the first day
just to wash his hands of the
situation, and never showed his face again.
He didn’t even bother hiring a nurse or an aide to look after her.
Bianca was left entirely alone, though a miscarriage was a relatively minor procedure by hospital standards.
She could easily order takeout, and
the hospital staff rolled meal carts
through the halls three times a day…
anyway, so she could manage by herself.
But losing the baby slammed Bianca with the brutal realization of just how vital Lincoln had been to her life.
She remembered a time her period
had been ate. Terrified she was pregnant, Lincoln had immediately held her and promised that if she
was, they would go to the
courthouse that very day:
He promised she wouldn’t miss out on a single thing, and he had even taken her ring shopping.
Unfortunately, it turned out to be a false alarm.
Ever since that scare, Lincoln had been incredibly careful, knowing how terrified she was of getting pregnant before marriage.
They rarely slept together anyway, because Lincoln respected her boundaries. No matter how much he wanted her, he refused to pressure her.
While she had secretly enjoyed watching Lincoln struggle to suppress his desires for her, over time, she had convinced herself he was just boring.
She still couldn’t entirely understand how she had let money blind her so thoroughly.
But she knew she was wrong now, and she had paid the ultimate, agonizing price for it.
During her two days in the hospital, Bianca constantly tried calling Lincoln.
But whether he had completely hardened his heart or just blocked her number, he never picked up.
He had likely blacklisted her entirely.
The second Bianca spotted Claire in the hospital hallway, she blocked Claire’s path without a second thought.
“Claire, please, you have to help me!”
Bursting into tears in front of Claire was an instant, desperate strategy Bianca came up with on the spot.
But Claire hadn’t missed the sharp, venomous flash of pure jealousy in Bianca’s eyes the moment she saw her.
