Chapter 1884
[ 665 words ]
“I don’t care what delusions you’ve cooked up in your head. I’ve told you before, I’m not interested in you, and I don’t want anything to do with you.”
“Have some damn self-respect!”
Owen yanked his hand out of her grasp. But in that exact moment, Jocelyn’s grip tightened aggressively.
She opened her mouth and let out a bloodcurdling scream. “Help! Help me, please! He’s assaulting me!”
She had sharp eyes and had perfectly timed her outburst just as the community security patrol walked by. At the sound of her screams, the guards immediately sprinted over.
“Stop right there! What the hell are you doing?”
Two security guards charged forward. Taking advantage of the chaos, Jocelyn violently pinched her own chest and frantically ruffled her hair, making herself look utterly battered and victimized.
The moment the guards approached, she threw herself toward them.
“Save me!”
The two guards quickly shielded Jocelyn behind them.
“Ma’am, are you alright?”
While one checked on Jocelyn, the other kept a highly suspicious, guarded eye on Owen.
“What happened here? What did this guy do to you?”
…
When Claire received the phone call, she was absolutely floored.
In broad daylight, Owen was sitting in a police precinct accused of sexually assaulting Jocelyn Thorne?
“Owen, I’m really curious why you called me instead of Phil or Norris?”
Weren’t they all supposed to head back to the estate for dinner tonight anyway?
Couldn’t he have just asked one of their older brothers to swing by?
As for Phil, Claire hadn’t even considered him. He was swamped with work,
constantly flying internationally. Getting him to the station wasn’t realistic.
Claire had just finished her morning lectures, and her afternoon schedule was clear.
She was the perfect person to head to the precinct.
“I called Norris first, but he was in the middle of teaching a class.”
Great. So she was the backup option.
By the time Claire rushed into the station, Jocelyn was sobbing hysterically, looking the picture of absolute misery.
Owen was sitting on the opposite side of the room, his face set in stone.
A female officer had repeatedly grilled him for a statement. When he staunchly
refused to admit to any assault, she slammed her hand hard on the desk.
“Mr. Churchill, I highly suggest you come clean. Look at the state of this woman. We have two security
guards who caught you in the act
and you’re still trying to talk your way out of it?”
“You have a lot of nerve pulling a stunt like this in broad daylight. Do you think your family’s bank account puts you above the law?”
“How do you know he comes from money?” Claire chimed in from the sidelines.
She had walked in right as the tirade began, and she couldn’t tell if this female officer was standing up for justice or just blindly siding with another woman.
While it was usually a relief to have female officers empathize with female victims that same empathy sometimes bred a terrifying bias that blinded them to glaring inconsistencies.
“Doesn’t he look rich to you?” The officer’s tone softened slightly upon seeing it was just a young girl.
But she pointed an accusatory finger at Owen. “That suit he’s wearing is the newest collection from an elite designer. His pants, his belt, his shoes-“
“Even his watch is worth a small fortune.”
“I’ve seen plenty of trust-fund brats like him. They think a few extra zeros in their bank accounts make them untouchable. They never use their brains.”
“The bigger the mess they make, the harder their families work to sweep it under the rug.”
“Just like right now. We have a witness, we have the evidence, and he still refuses to admit he assaulted this girl!”
“Phoebe!” The male officer standing nearby quickly intervened. “Watch your mouth.”
“Wealth has no bearing on criminality. Since he denies the assault, it’s our job to conduct a proper investigation.”
Claire wholeheartedly agreed with
the male officer. “I absolutely agree that this needs a thorough
investigation. Out of all the women my brother knows Ms Thorne
barely scrapes the bottom of the
barrel.”

“She isn’t even as attractive as my brother. Why would he assault someone who is a
downgrade in every conceivable way?”
