Chapter 1885
[ 585 words ]
Jocelyn shot Claire a look filled with intense humiliation.
She was indeed less attractive than Owen, but that shouldn’t be an excuse to clear his name!
“Officer, did you hear that? His sister isn’t just defending him, she’s insulting me!”
Knowing full well that the female officer was the one firmly in her corner, Jocelyn immediately unleashed fresh tears in Phoebe’s direction.
Phoebe turned to Claire, her gaze turning severe. “You’re Owen’s sister?”
“Yes, I am.” Claire didn’t back down from the glare for a second.
Phoebe looked displeased. “You might be his sister, but you’re also a woman, and a very beautiful one at that.”
“When you stand up for him like this, do you ever stop to think that you could be in her shoes one day? If something like this happened to you, would you want people saying those things about you?”
Claire looked at the officer. It was glaringly obvious that Phoebe genuinely wanted to protect women.
“Officer, I might not know the full story yet, but you can’t just assume my brother is guilty simply because she’s the one who made the call.”
“Putting aside the fact that she’s not his type, tell me, does my brother look like he’s lost his mind?”
Phoebe shook her head.
Owen was articulate, logical, and composed while defending himself.
If a guy like him were to commit a crime, it would be a calculated, high-IQ offense.
“So why would my brother randomly decide to sexually assault her in broad daylight? Do you really think he’s that desperate?”
Claire gestured toward Owen. “Given his looks and status, if he needed to blow off steam, he could have a line of willing women at his door with a snap of his fingers, couldn’t he?”
Though Phoebe hated to admit it, she knew Claire was absolutely right.
Owen’s mouth twitched. He lightly flicked Claire’s forehead. “What kind of nonsense are you spouting? Have some decorum.”
Claire shrugged. “I’m being perfectly polite, but that doesn’t change the facts.”
“You aren’t a psycho, so why would you grope her in public?”
Owen smirked. “Exactly what I said. But this lovely officer has already decided I’m the villain.”
“According to her logic, my family’s wealth is the reason I act without consequences.”
Claire turned her attention back to Phoebe.
Officer Brooks also shook his head in disagreement. “Phoebe, you can’t let your prejudices cloud your judgment.”
“The inconsistencies in this case align with what Mr. Churchill’s sister just pointed out. He simply doesn’t have the motive.”
“But there are witnesses to Jocelyn being assaulted!” Phoebe still refused to let it
go.
She pointed to the statements from
the two security guards. “They both
cely Vel
testified that they rushed over because they beard,
screaming for help.”
“It was just Owen and Jocelyn at the scene. If he didn’t do it, are you suggesting she
ripped her own clothes open to frame him?”
“What could a girl possibly gain from ruining her own reputation like that?”
was firmly planted in Jocelyn’s.
Claire quickly realized that s net
camp simply because she was a woman she was, the weaker party, and she was the one crying.
In contrast, Officer Brooks was operating entirely on logic.
Claire asked, “The two guards only heard her screaming. Did they actually witness my brother physically assaulting her?”
Phoebe froze. She looked over at the two witnesses sitting nearby.
Because Jocelyn had been crying so hysterically, the guards hadn’t left yet, planning
to escort her back to her apartment.
Noticing Phoebe looking their way, both men shifted uncomfortably.
Sergeant Miller, the taller of the two, finally spoke up. “We didn’t see the act itself. But Ms. Thorne looked extremely disheveled, crying her eyes out And her shirt was. unbuttoned…”
