Chapter 1888
[ 596 words ]
“Wait, you seriously want to end up with the ‘monster’ who assaulted you?”
“Your moral compass is seriously twisted.”
Claire’s rapid-fire deductions completely derailed Jocelyn’s train of thought.
“I refuse to settle!” Jocelyn suddenly blurted out.
“Excellent. I completely support you,” Claire clapped her hands together.
Jocelyn stared at Claire, utterly confused, half-convinced the girl was a psycho.
She had just announced she wouldn’t settle with her brother. Did Claire not realize what that meant?
Claire was more than happy to spell it out for her.
“As a woman, if you were genuinely assaulted, I wholeheartedly support your refusal to settle.”
“But as a law-abiding citizen, I also support my brother’s refusal to settle with you.”
“I don’t think you realize this, but it’s incredibly easy for forensics to determine whether the red marks on your skin were self-inflicted or caused by someone else.”
“If the local precinct can’t handle it, we’ll escalate it to the main precinct.”
“Oh, and about those security cameras are you absolutely certain they’re completely dead?”
As Claire finished speaking, all the color drained from Jocelyn’s face.
She honestly wasn’t sure if the camera was completely blind.
“You can recover the footage?” Phoebe was highly skeptical.
“It depends on the extent of the damage.” Claire wasn’t making any guarantees.
It wasn’t like the camera broke *after* recording the incident.
If the hardware was dead from the start, there would be nothing to recover.
Phoebe and Officer Brooks both looked to the security guards.
Sergeant Miller clarified, “The camera isn’t totally fried. The feed was just flickering and the image was blurry.”
“You guys didn’t just cut the power to save on electricity, did you?” Claire asked.
“No, the security grid is integrated. You can’t just switch off a single unit, and there’s no reason to skimp on power-“
Sergeant Miller really wanted to emphasize that they were a high-end luxury
community. They d
to cut corners on utilities
“How is that possible? You clearly said the camera was broken earlier!” Jocelyn went deathly pale.
If Claire could actually restore the footage, didn’t that mean it might have recorded everything?
No, she hadn’t even executed the next phase of her plan yet. She couldn’t let Owen slip through her fingers this easily!
Sergeant Miller had felt sorry for
Jocelyn initially, but the realization et
that she might be lying completely killed any sympathy he had content belongs to swnövels.net>
“I said the camera was malfunctioning, not completely destroyed.”
Sergeant Miller made a point to clarify.
At that, Phoebe didn’t even need Claire to push her. She immediately volunteered to
go back and check the surveillance system.
Owen wasn’t a flight risk, but he tagged along back to the apartment complex anyway.
Jocelyn desperately wanted to flee, but with the officers right there, she was forced to return to the scene.
By the time they arrived, the maintenance technician was already there.
He was just about to dismantle the unit when Claire and the police stopped him.
“We need to attempt a recovery first. There’s been an incident, and this footage is crucial evidence.”
Officer Brooks quickly explained the situation.
The technician looked uneasy. “If I try to repair it, I can’t guarantee I won’t accidentally wipe the drive.”
He was competent, but not skilled enough to make promises to the police.
“Mind if I take a look?” Claire actually had quite a bit of experience with this sort of hardware.
The technician took one look at her
youth and scoffed. “You guys are better off calling in a real expert, or submitting a request for our
Company’s senior engineers –
“If she breaks it and the data gets wiped “
He wanted absolutely no liability.
Phoebe felt the same way. When they were heading over, she had already called a friend for backup.
The guy was a bona fide tech wizard.
